Same here. It was usually assumed the word of an adult, not just school adults, was good enough to get me punished at home as well.

To be fair, the word of an adult has diminished in value over time and perhaps should not be trusted as much as it used to be.

Mine was a Lilac bush behind the garage. I had to cut the switch, man a green Lilac switch hurts!!

There were some years that bush almost died from switches being cut.

    Don

Mom's weapon of choice was the dreaded wooden spoon. Seemed like she was ALWAYS cooking, so it was a weapon of convenience, never far from her hand.

The good thing about it was she bought cheap ones so they broke pretty easy. If she had access to the ones my wife buys at that little shop in Silver Lake, carved from hard maple, my arse would still be hurting.

When I was "on the road" as a LEO, I was seeing the beginning of this breakdown. Parents refused to believe that their darling little angels could possibly have done what the big, mean, lying cops said.

As with you, had I gotten in trouble at school or with LE, there would have been additional, and more severe, consequences at home.

How odd the correlation of how all of us were raised with a similar parental ethos turned out to be responsible adults...

And, conversely, how many of today's "kids" seem to be entitled, spoiled brats. I realize that we are not looking at hard numbers here, but they sure seem to make their snow-flake-y brattiness excessively evident.

It just seems that the prevailing custom today is away from an ethos of certain, swift, but appropriate punishment for misconduct.

Yes sir. I remember getting in a fight walking home from school once. Police officer broke it up and had us get in his car. I would have rather went to jail than to the house and explain to dad why a cop brought me home from school. Thankfully the cop was a “boys will be boys” kind of guy, and talked to dad about everything before he left. I still got the belt, but it was nowhere near as bad as it would’ve been without the officer sticking up for us.

Thanks to liability and policy issues, some places LEOs lack that kind of discretion. Once you get in the car, into the system you go. Cutting someone a break can often lead to "no good deed goes unpunished."

Discretion can be abused, but it seems like this ended up being a "positive learning experience" for you, though I'm sure it did NOT seem like it at the time. :):

Lol ya at the time I was mad he didn’t just break it up and let us be. Now, as an adult, I wish I would’ve at least got to thank him and show some gratitude for preventing me from sleeping on my stomach for a week :):

And ya, I’ve read some horror stories (here even) of LEO’s cutting people breaks and those people still being butt hurt over the encounter. It’s a thankless job. I’ve seen people yell and chew them up one side and down the other, and they’ve kept their composure. I couldn’t do it

The old school definitions for the lower IQ ranges were...
    70-80 borderline deficient
    50-69 moron
    20-49 imbecile
    below 20 idiot

So calling him a moron is giving him quite a bit of credit.

    incidentally the new scale goes...
    50-69 mild intellectual disability
    35-49 moderate " "
    20-34 severe " "
    below 20 profound " "
