So you you are fine with a person that has no idea how to handle a weapon and may not even know how to load it or may have never fired it? VS a person that has at least been exposed to safe handling?
    uhhh I will never win

Maybe, just offer incentives to people for taking a class.

Maybe, tell the media to stop making people with guns to look like the bad guys, so that they loath to ask questions.

You seem stuck on the fact that "no required training" means no training.

And you're right. You won't win.
I've encountered people that took "required" classes from other states, that I wouldn't want to be around.
And I've encountered people that had a friend/family/INGOer teach them in a few hours that I would trust.

Make it mandatory, then make people go to this trainer

What are the numbers on people being shot by untrained carriers outside their own homes?

Restrictions on constitutional rights (and there can be some under the right circumstances) shouldn't be based upon what we think may help apart from actual evidence.

I think I am spoiled I spent 24 years in the Army and got to attend all kinds of "high speed" training.
I expect people around me to be competent.
I was also a Drill Sergeant for 3 years if a Private was unsafe or too stupid I just filled a few papers a poof they were gone!
I agree you cannot train the stupid out of some people!

I've seen military training. I'm from generations of military people, and I know hundreds of military people.
    Some have truly exceptional skills.
Some, I wouldn't trust to hold a gun bag with an unloaded gun.
My "military training" consisted of them showing me the safety, the trigger, told me to point the gun "that way" and then 30 rounds (over 6 years).
I got a LOT better training when we carried SEALs, and they actually took the time to talk and explain.
Not a lot of military people have that access.

Once again. I thing people should get training. On their own.
In fact, after I teach beginners, I recommend it to them. I tell them I just introduced them to it.
    I explain that it's a perishable skill.

But required, by the State... NO.

How would you feel if Rahm Emmanuel was in charge of determining what training you needed?
How about if he appoints the Chief of Police, who is anti-gun, to determine that training?

I can't vouch for all MOS but the basic Army Dude fires several hundreds of rounds nowadays.
He better be able to explain the 8 steps of how an M16 functions in detail. If he flagged his buddy he would get "smoked".
Grown men only learn though physical pain or taking away money or time.
Taught many how to shoot the same as you with patience and caring.
I was the 1SG of an Instructor Company at Ft Sill OK we ran all of the small arms ranges I had 110 Instructors.
I have no words to explain the wheelchair range why did it have shotgun shells everywhere? Shows a lack of pride in the range and a trip hazard not to mention being a dumb a&& with training.
The rest of what I seen was idiots.
