From their own website, they were purchased by a Hong Kong based company in 2013. Not "China".

How has the acquisition impacted the U.S. pork industry and the country’s economy?

Smithfield and the U.S. pork industry export products to China, benefitting American pork producers and processors. More exports to China mean more American jobs and more demand for products “Made in the USA,” and reduces the U.S. global trade deficit.

Does Smithfield now import products from China?

Smithfield has not, does not, and will not import any products from China to the United States. No Smithfield products come from animals raised, processed, or packaged in China. All our U.S. products are made in one of our nearly 50 facilities across America. These products are produced in compliance with the strict standards and regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal and state authorities.

Is WH Group owned by the Chinese government?

WH Group is a publicly traded company with shareholders around the world. Anyone anywhere can purchase shares of WH Group on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the stock code 00288. In fact, WH Group’s shareholders include many large U.S.-based financial institutions. It is not a Chinese state-owned enterprise and does not undertake commercial activities on behalf of the Chinese government.

Now you can agree or disagree with us selling to China, but that is a genie that will never be put back in the bottle. But to say that Smithfield is Chinese-owned is not correct.
Buy that second freezer if you can.
    Oh, and lots of salt.

Can't have 2024 or 2022 until the problems are fixed with Vote integrity. There are only 2 boxes that will make a difference and one box is not legitimate currently. The only reason to vote until that happens is because I can, not that it means anything at this point.

The days grow shorter as the options grow fewer. A bunch of pee and vinegar, back and forth in this thread. But the common thread is that none of us like what we have currently. We're all in the same boat. The argument seems to be which direction to paddle. I'm short on the belief of a political answer being available any longer.

Well, my strategy is still a peaceful political option, it's just distasteful to people who worship the federal government.
They don't seem to understand just how distasteful the alternative is.

    What's the alternative?

Start studying mandarin? At the rate this thing is going, our government is going to hand the country over to China.

    No.
American/world big business/banking is handing over the country...
All in the name of "Capitalism", chasing short term profits instead of seeing the long view...

Granted, they are doing this by buying Congress members and even presidents.
"Most Favored Nation" trading status given to China for how long?...

You are attempting to impart forethought & malice to what is purely corporate greed.
Places like Walmart want to buy cheaper products so they make larger profits,
They buy some politicians, and presto!..

Wages stagnate in the US, jobs go overseas, wages continue to stagnate for decades...
All the while Walmart (and every other big corporation) makes trillions of dollars...

Meanwhile, back here in the US,
The same Congress members and big business types circulate the propaganda that it's "Illegal Aliens" taking US jobs,
When the manufacturing & production jobs went to China and elsewhere...

I've always wondered what kind of a worker can be replaced by an immigrant that has no education, doesn't speak the language, has no skill set...?

    "They're Taking Our JOBS!"

... Meanwhile employers are having to put pictures of items on cash registers, have customers check themselves out because they can't find workers of any kind that can change a dollar bill or use a bar code scanner without screwing it up...

We've been lied to all along...

The opposite of Communism isn't Capitalism.
Communism is a system of government, while Capitalism is an economic model.

The opposite of Communism is Democracy.

The opposite of Capitalism is Free Market.
    Capitalism is economic Communism.

    Socialism isn't Communism.
Society can't function without social contracts, more simply put, socialism.
(Even gangs have to socialize to become a gang...)

Open, freely elected governments are Socialist governments by definition.
Everyone has to socialize & agree to have freely elected representatives, and abide by the rules laid out, these are all social contracts...

Unions aren't the bad guys (most times).
Unions are representation at the board room level...

The economic "Middle Class" in America was built on Union negotiated contracts, giving labor a voice.

"Right To Work" is just a smoke screen by big business to bust unions, keep employer's wealth concentrated at the top 1%.

Let's not forget unions give advanced education, keep the number of worker deaths/injuries to a minimum & provide for those that were injured, or their families when they are killed.
Places like Walmart profit from dead employees without providing for the families,
Its commonly called "Dead Peasant Insurance", insurance for when the livestock dies...

Its up to you how you want to see things,
I assume everyone can see these things for what they are...

Here's the deal, it doesn't take more than corporate greed to hand the US over to China.

    In that case...
Its the top 1% in China joining the global money game.

I will concede that point, the top 1% in China have joined the Capitalism game...
And they are quite good at it.

    China has something Russia doesn't...
A MUCH more efficient production & manufacturing system.

While Russian oligarchs are content to sell natural resources, dope & weapons, all high profit items,
China is raising education levels, and has installed a serious work ethic into it's citizens.

If you were to turn this around and use WWII analogy,
The US was the manufacturing powerhouse that won WWII.
None of the Axis powers could produce finished products like the US could, and sheer numbers won that war.

If that happened today, China is the manufacturing powerhouse.
China was on the Allied side during WWII...

With raw materials China has become modernized, it's getting them out of the ground and into refineries, then onto finished products (at the cost of their environment) much faster than the US can.

All our raw materials are dangerous & deep, the easy surface stuff is gone.
We burned it up in infrastructure, and a dozen wars...
While China is just getting tapped into their natural resources in a productive way.

China is also expanding, but it's not what most think,
They are after natural resources, and emerging economies that can produce those natural resources, controlling the trade of those natural resources.

Doesn't matter if it's coal, oil, natural gas, iron ore, bauxite (aluminum) ore, uranium, gold, diamonds, lumber, what ever, they are gradually getting bigger chunks of production every day,

And every day they expand refining & manufacturing,

Every day they crank out MERIT BASED advanced education people with goal oriented work ethics.
If you don't do well in primary school, they hand you a shovel.
If you don't do well in secondary school, they make you an equipment operator.

There isn't any buying yourself into a collage on borrowed money, treating it like a keg party with a $50,000 cover charge...
You either make the grade or you don't, and if you don't, you don't advance to the next round...

Every day we crank out videogame & social media addicts, drug addicts, everyone latching onto something that produces nothing...

We have about 330 million people, they have about 2 billion under their control, and a tight control at that...

We have agriculture, some weapons manufacturing, some vehicle manufacturing...

We have failing infrastructure (electrical, sewage, transportation) the WWII generation built from the ground up,
With everything manufactured in the USA,
And we can't even repair it without parts from China.

Its a sad state of affairs, but we are a "Consumer Economy" for the most part, we consume without manufacturing/producing durable, hard goods.

The Chinese saw this back in the 60s/70s and took full advantage of it, fostering it with fidget spinners, cheap makeup, disposable everything, "Made In China"...

Not much I can do other than try to make sure I can feed myself & family/friends,
Its not going to get better unless everyone in the US gets on the same page...

And since Americans can't agree on ANYTHING,
The "Divide & Conquer" propaganda campaign is working really well we are seeing our own demise at our own hands...

Not sure why you keep bashing capitalism, it's what made the U.S. the most prosperous, powerful nation on the planet. Coincidently, a shift toward capitalism is what allowed China to drag its self from third, to second, to fisrt world status. As Xi begins to reign the freedom back in, we'll start watching their economy begin to falter. We're just starting to see the beginning. And it's our slide toward socialism that's taking us off our perch.

Out education system is broken because of socialist ideology creeping into the system. It's the proverbial everyone gets a trophy thinking that's gotten us here. Kids aren't made to perform for their grades because we've taken the spread the wealth ideas that wrecks the industriousness vital to strong economies and woven them into our education system.

Capitalism isn't responsible for the current situation we find ourselves in. You decry the last few generations of lazy, immature, video game junkies, but it's socialism that created theses entitled wastes of skin. We have so many safety nets and handouts, no one has to take life very seriously anymore. If real life were allowed to smack these people in the face, most of those problems would take care of themselves. But alas, we can't do that, because it would be "unkind" and "unfair".

It's so complicated to break down how it is kind of a problem while only being a problem due to circumstances.

When we allowed powerful people to start buying politicians, to enact laws that remove any of their personal liability in business, capitalism was broken. The government plays favorites and decides who succeeds and who fails in big business, all while pulling money from your wallet to pay for some bastard's poor corporate choices.

And if you're a small business owner, they laugh at you because you don't have the money to get favors from them.

As things stand in the US, if we want to keep all of these ridiculous laws that fundamentally break capitalism, then capitalism is a problem. It's not intended to work under those circumstances. Socialism is the economic system designed around those kind of laws being in place. In socialism they tend to reign in corporations who get out of line with their begging for favors.

Any economic system can be made to work or made to fail. The US has decided to pick the worst of both worlds, and then wonders why things are a mess. ("""""free""""" centrally planned market propping up a vast welfare state) [in a free market, licensing from the government doesn't exist, neither do LLCs. The government ignores the economy and leaves it to the people, perhaps helping geopolitical situations to encourage trade]

China plows forward with a socialist methodology to their markets, but we're so used to how broken our system is, it looks like capitalism to us.

Ultimately the problem boils down to there being a very blurry line separating the truly massive corporations from the government.
I still think one of the most astonishingly dumb things the US government has ever done was privatize manufacturing of next generation air craft, arms, etc. Secrets mysteriously end up in the hands of our enemies and we see the same damn thing being paraded down their streets. Meanwhile they always find a way to delay a project the government really wants, so they can charge 100 fold more for it by the time it's all said and done.

The F35 was a 1 TRILLION DOLLAR AIR CRAFT. That's how much money the US tax payers (all 140 million of us) gave to Lockheed Martin, a private company.
If it had been done in house with responsible leadership, it wouldn't have even cost half that much.

A vote for the candidate that will bring the quickest demise seems prudent. Allows for the rebirth to start sooner.
