It's an election year sums it up. Dems need a platform to run on...now they have it. They will use this and immigration to pull back in to power...

Except for the fact that that is why they were the losers last election. Let them run on gun control and immigration. Bring it! We couldn't ask for anything better.

Getting another constitutionalist on the Supreme Court wouldn’t hurt right now either. Then maybe we can get some of the stupid laws that might be passed in the future deemed unconstitutional.

Yep this is important. I'd love to see Ginsberg impeached for some of the things she's said lately. She's not impartial

    ::ahem::

Frankly with everyone talking about the Dems gaining control of at least one house of Congress, it wouldn't surprise me if the GOP actually gained seats in either or both houses. Remember during the Presidential election that EVERYONE KNEW that HRC would win, it was just a matter of going through the formality of having the election, but in the end we all know what happened. Hillary was a lousy candidate with no message other than "vote for me because Trump isn't qualified." Seriously, does anyone remember any promises she made about legislation, problems that she planned to fix or burning issues that needed to be addressed? She was so lousy that many in her own party really didn't want to vote for her. Well, they're talking that way now about the upcoming midterms. And so far I've not heard the Dems put forth a single constructive idea for policies or legislation to address America's problems. It's all what HRC did in 2016, hate Trump. That's it. And whether you buy it or not, Republicans can, if they want to win, campaign on actual things that Trump has been trying to do. Build the wall. Crack down on illegal immigration. Defeat ISIS. Lower taxes. Get rid of Obamacare. Rework trade deals with other countries. Fix the infrastructure. He's getting so much opposition but at least he's trying to do these things. I remember back in '92 when that little troll Ross Perot split the Republicans against GHWB and Bill Clinton won. Ol' "Three-Dollar Bill" won on a campaign of "It's the economy, stupid." That's what'll happen this year if the Republicans play it right. All that squawking about Russia and collusion will mean precisely dick if the government actually tries to make average Americans' lives better, which is all anyone truly cares about.

I am really comforted that these wonderful young people are stepping forward to lead us in a national conversation to decrease gun violence. I am sure they have a lot of fine ideas that will benefit us all. After all these kids were eating Tide Pods last week.

Trump says he just signed a memorandum directing Attorney General to take steps to ban all devices - like bump stocks - that turn legal weapons into machine guns. Expects regulation to be finalized very soon.

Give them an inch... this isn't going to be the olive branch he hopes it is.

Edit: Sanders also says there is discussion about raising the age to purchase "AR-15 style weapons"

    **** this ****.

Just heard a Republican state lawmaker on the radio, and one of his ideas was waiting periods. The a-hole bought rifles over the course of a year... How long would a waiting period have to be to affect that?

Also raising age to buy rifle to 21.

This was also covered briefly on WTHR at noon today. Ann Marie Tiernan said "democrat proposals to raise the age to buy "automatic rifles like the automatic rifle used in the Florida school shooting." ??? Clearly the news maker meme is to conflate the AR-15 with both automatic rifles and assault weapons. I had the DVR on and had to play it back several time to be sure I heard correctly. Wife said she didn't have a problem with the proposal and I called her a democrat. I guess the couch will be calling tonight.

.....Do people not realize that at 18, a lot of people move out of their parents house and are on their own? Why are they proposing to strip their right to protect themselves and their property with an AR? What if that 18 year old buys a plot of land in the country and lives on it? It's going to be illegal for him to have an AR? Ridiculous.

Not every 18 year old is a crying baby that can't make good decisions.

Cross-posting this here, as well... until we decide which thread to use for this discussion:

The changing of age on AR-15 style guns will hurt us... because it's likely to give AR-15 style guns its own class... and we'll no longer be able to keep it in the same category as every other hunting rifle.

Makes it far easier to attack the "scary looking gun" in the future, if that's what happens.

Not to mention they can go fight the bankers wars with an ar15 at the age of 18

Raise the age to buy "assault rifles"...
Yet they want to lower the voting age, which I would deem to be MORE DANGEROUS than the rifles.

    WTF?

I did rear recently one Congressman suggested that raising the age to 21 for all gun purchases except for persons with a military ID. They felt that anyone that can die for their country should be exempt...

Did they forget the part where those people who sign up to risk their lives for their country do so for the Constitution? I didn't join to serve Rainbow kitten puppy feel good land. If they want to disarm Americans, they need to disarm everyone.

What a cowardly proposal. Don't try to separate the military from the rest of the country. If your cause is just, you should have the balls to disarm the trained citizens, too.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I just received the following email from RMR (Rocky Mountain Reloading) and I thought he did a good job of articulating the view that most of us have when people begin talking about gun control.

"Have you ever heard a large bell ring? The sound is rich, unmistakable, and carries for miles. I remember many a quiet summer afternoon hearing a bell shatter the peaceful silence to signal lunch time for someone far away. As you read this, I want you to try to envision that sound. There is a saying that once a bell has rung, you can’t un-ring it. Over the last few days, this saying has come to my mind time and time again.

As I’m sure you have heard or read, since the most recent school shooting there has been a massive push for bans on AR-15 style rifles. I have a great and dear friend who does not think the way I do. He supports bans on guns. He posted something on social media that brought this all to my mind. He said something to the effect of, “To those who love guns I ask, stop loving guns and start loving people.” To which I replied, “I do love people. That is why I believe in individual ownership of firearms.”

I do not love guns. I love people. I have a wonderful wife and six amazing kids. I have friends and family all over the world. They are who I care about. I wish I never had to worry about violence or crime directed towards my family and friends. If guns never existed, there would be no worries about gun violence. However, guns do exist. Lots and lots of them. The days of not having to worry about our family and friends being murdered are over. That bell has been rung. And there “ain’t no way to un-ring it.” If you believe that banning them will bring back those millions of AR-15s that were made over the last decade and a half, you live in a fantasy land. Gun bans won’t work in America. We are different than anywhere else in the world. I can hear those skeptics screaming at the computer saying, “But Australia banned guns and they don’t have mass shootings anymore!” Well, setting aside Australia’s higher violent crime rate,Australia has only 20 million people on the entire continent.

The United States has 325 million people and more guns than there are people. Yes, that is right, there are more guns in the US than there are people. No other country that has banned guns had anywhere near either number. It is an unrealistic view of the world to believe that banning guns in the US will solve or help with the murders and violent crime in this country. Let me say this again, I do not love guns. But I recognize that we live in a world where they exist and we aren’t going to get rid of them. And if we tried to get rid of them more people will die in the ensuing civil war than are killed in violent crime. We tried getting rid of alcohol once and lots of people died and good innocent Americans suddenly became criminals. There is no reason the same thing would not happen with firearms. So, because I love people, I support the individual ownership, use, and carrying of guns.

Because we live in a world where there are guns, a noble and proper use of a gun is for self-defense and defense of others. That is its valid purpose. In order to do that proficiently and safely, training and competition are excellent hobbies and entertainment. Yes, it is okay to enjoy firearm ownership and have fun with them and not be a murderer. That is why I can, in good conscience, say that I enjoy firearms. I like having the ability to defend myself and my family and I enjoy becoming proficient at using firearms. It is okay to enjoy being skilled at defending yourself. I would argue that the more dangerous mindset is the one where someone believes that they are safer by ignoring the fact that guns exist and walk around hoping and wishing that they would go away.

We cannot change the way people act or feel by making a law. Evil people will continue to be evil after a ban is passed. The only people we can control by making a law is those who are already inclined to keep the laws. And those people are not any more dangerous with or without a gun. I own firearms because I know that I can’t depend on government or anyone else for my protection. I heard the bell ring. And it doesn’t do any good to wish I could go back and un-ring it. Instead, we need to go forward. We need programs or groups that teach the value of human life. The true tragedy in America is the proliferation of blame and justification. For too long we’ve been taught to never accept the consequences of our actions. Our kids need to hear the truth again. That nobody is to blame for our sadness but ourselves.

We live in a first world country where we have way more to be happy about than anywhere else in the world yet we have people running around playing the victim. I’ve lived in a third world country and saw that people can be happy in any circumstance so long as they accept that life is what it is and you don’t need everyone on Facebook to love you to be worthwhile. So, to those who say to me, “stop loving guns, and start loving people,” I say this, “stop loving yourself, and start loving others.” Don't try to ignore the fact that guns and evil exist. Make yourself someone who will stand up against the evil in the world and accept that you might need to learn how to use a gun to do so.

P.S. this is the condensed version of what I had originally written and planned. I realized after about three pages that I had an entire book’s worth of arguments and counterarguments that would take several pages each to cover. So, if you read this and you have any questions or arguments against what I said, please feel free to ask me about them. They just aren’t in this email."
