I agree with your assessment that parenting is a real make or break aspect. Poor parenting is usually reflected in the child. I firmly believe there is "bad seed" out there. Good parents, multiple kids raised but only one turns out to be a FU. Nature vs. nurture.

Gun lock laws = completely bogus. My hammers, knives, car, gas can and matches are all extremely dangerous. Some of those items are easily concealed. Must I lock them all up
"for the children" ? How many locks? What kind of locks? What about my safety when I need what's behind the lock and seconds make the difference in outcome? You get it. The .gov can stay out of my house.

I agree there are people born with a head full of bad wiring, others turn their brains into worms & acid with alcohol, drugs, etc.

As to the argument over dangerous things,
You don't let toddlers have knives, guns, gas & matches, etc.
It's YOUR JOB to protect children until they develope enough mental capacity, and judgment to use said items.

*IF* you don't, then you are a lousy parent.
    Criminally lousy.
    Period.

    And despite the mental backflip,
This has nothing to do with the government.
It's simply people too self absorbed, narcissistic to deal with being parents.

Again, I won't put politics into a morality issue, ANY parent should protect their children, but it seems humans have lost, or been socially engineered out of that basic instinct...

    Parents charged with involuntary manslaughter.

I don't yet know enough to have an opinion on the charges.

I do hold this opinion- Know your kids. Know what they are going through. Secure your firearms, particularly if you suspect your child has...issues...and you should know that.

    Another article. From the article:

"The teen recorded videos the night before the shooting in which he "talked about shooting and killing students the next day at Oxford High School," Oakland County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tim Willis said Wednesday.

The sophomore's behavior was concerning enough that school officials called Crumbley's parents to the school for a meeting on Tuesday just a few hours before the shooting, but Superintendent of Oxford Community Schools Tim Throne said that discipline wasn't warranted.

Crumbley met with school officials on Monday as well due to behavioral issues in the classroom, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said."

Sounds like there were several warnings with no action.

This kid seems like a cross between Nicholas Cruz (troubled and trouble-maker that school is desperately trying not to have appear in any 'permanent records') and Adam Lanza (just not right in the head, possibly stole the gun from his parents)

I am reading he quoted Oppenheimer witnessing the Trinity test (and incidentally, the Bhagavad Gita) on a short video clip on instagram

"Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" to which he appended "See you tomorrow, Oxford"

Look, I don't know what's true and what's not, but I have some familiarity (not going further than that) with situations where teenagers have expressed very disturbing thoughts. Usually, the first fear is suicide, followed by other possibilities. I say that to say this, I can't imagine a situation where one would be aware of significant issues going on and the parent would not do EVERYTHING they can think of to keep the worst from happening from securing firearms to getting counseling/psychiatric care to inpatient if necessary. It's just what you do. I have seen what happens when you don't. Denial?

I am really uncomfortable with the urge to retroactively prosecute people for failing to see the future or to read another person's mind.

I wouldn’t exactly call that on the run. The most I can infer from this is that they charged them. Maybe try to arrest them. Not home. And now it’s a manhunt?
I'm a "wait and see" kind of guy, but if true, this doesn't look good:

"The Crumbleys were supposed to turn themselves in with their attorney on Friday but they stopped communicating and cooperating with their attorney..."

News just said the family attorney was in contact prior to charges being announced. Now he cannot reach the parents since they were charged.

There's a fine line between 'yes, we know our child has issues' and 'yes we know our child has issues and we suspect he may murder'. But, as parents, why would they allow a child to have access to something that could take the kid from 'has issues' to 'has issues, may murder'.

And if I knew my kid had issues, I sure as hell would remove access to any firearms. Keep the former from becoming the latter.

Like I said- my first thought before "murder" would be "suicide" and either way, you have to throw everything in the world at the problem from every angle.

School administration should be charged with negligence. If there were so many warning signs - enough to warrant a meeting with the parents - why was the kids locker not searched? Why was his backpack not searched? Sure, a lot of responsibility falls on the parents, but there was a lot of fail on the part o the school as well.
