Anything that comes from this will be bad. Our only hope is to continue to contact every legislator repeatedly and ask them to vote against the anti-gun measures. It's pretty much a sure thing that some bad laws will be passed, but possibly we can influence them to limit the scope.

One of the many problems we have is convincing people that the 2nd Amendment is just as important today as it was near our nations founding.

It is difficult to sell people on the idea that we need firepower to resist tyranny is still important, which it is. We have existed in relative peace and internal stability since the 1870's, after the end of the Civil War.

The left is outraged at the attempted "insurrection" of Jan 6th, yet they fail to grasp that IF they are correct how would they resist a tyranny of Donald Trump? What if Biden decides not to leave, how do we resist?

The public ownership of significant firepower deters the government from even considering an attempt to take away any other rights, just like MAD (mutually assured destruction) of the a nuclear holocaust of the cold war.

If we were to watch the movie Hotel Rwanda we would have a clear example of how dangerous speech can be. Constantly calling a group of citizen "cockroaches" and egging on tribal animosity killed over 500,000 innocent people. ANY liberty that is abused can be and is dangerous.

Yet I understand. It is hard to equate the loss of innocent children today with the potential loss of freedom at some vague time in the future. How do we get people to understand that the risk of innocent lives being lost is justified by the potential risk of losing all freedom at some random time in the future?

For those that have lost loved ones to gun violence there is no convincing. Most people are too distraught and in suffering to have a rational discussion. It would be much like trying to discuss the importance of keeping alcohol legal to someone who lost a loved one to a drunk driver. The loss of a loved one to a drunk driver far overwhelms rational thought at least for a significant time afterwards.

So too it is with mass shootings. We must work to reign in our own emotional reaction to an attack on the 2nd Amendment with sympathy, compassion, and also logic and reasoning. We must try as hard as we can to say that we suffer many outrages. This IS the price of liberty, for any freedom can and will be abused. Shoot up a school or call people cockroaches, each leads to too many deaths. Yet the freedom to possess firepower is as important as the freedom to speak out, to meet and organize, and to protect all of the freedoms included in the Bill of Rights, including many not specifically named as our founders were wise enough to understand when they included the 9th Amendment.

We don't defend the right to keep and bear arms so that we can have mass shootings, but to guarantee that we can live in a free and open society forever. Sadly, the price of protecting that freedom IS to suffer from shootings, mass or otherwise.

    Regards,

    Doug

NRA statement on the "framework". Lets see what the bill contains.

"The NRA is committed to real solutions to help stop violence in our communities. We encourage our elected officials to provide more resources to secure our schools, fix … our severely broken mental health system and support law enforcement," the NRA said in a statement to Fox News Digital on Sunday.

"As is our policy, the NRA does not take positions on ‘frameworks’. We will make our position known when the full text of the bill is available for review," the statement continued.

"The NRA will continue to oppose any effort to insert gun control policies, initiatives that override constitutional due process protections and efforts to deprive law-abiding citizens of their fundamental right to protect themselves and their loved ones into this or any other legislation," the NRA added in its statement.

I sent e-mails Sunday, I called at lunch, and authored variations of the attached text to Braun, Young, Manchin and Sinema.

Far far from my best work, but I felt a strong need to get something in front of the Congresscritters.

I have found very little hard data on what is being negotiated. The Bill proposals at Congress.gov are all over the place and do not appear to correlate with what is in the press. This is one of those cases where my automatic assumption is, whatever comes out will probably be worse than I could imagine.

As always, if you can use anything in the attachment, feel free to plagiarize.
