Give it about thirty and if the lights don't come back on start the generator up and start plugging in stuff. Life goes on. Turn on the computer and find out what is going on.

The quiet little nurse comes in the room. Sliding the door behind her she says, that Dr. Simpson will be in shortly to let you know what the tests have revealed and that she needs to escort Mr. Jones back to the waiting area. You get up and walk over to Trey who is semi asleep sitting up in the chair by the door. As you reach to wake him he says I heard her.. and giggles, with you as he stands up and gathers rifle and covers it with his coat. He has never been one to be sneaked up on, he is always awake when you think he is asleep and never have you scared him. He is such a light sleeper. He always says he is just resting his eyes..

As the nurse opens the sliding door you notice the commotion from across the hall has subsided. The nurse notices an orderly cleaning up the room and instructs Trey to watch his step as they are cleaning the floor might be slick.

As your loving husband gives you a deep meaningful hug you whisper in his ear, thank you and I love you.. He stops, kisses you and says he will be right outside in the waiting area.

The little nurse swipes her access card on the pad near the doors and the right side door opens, she motions you through and as you walk by her, you ask her to come and get you if anything out of the ordinary happens with Thomas.. She nods her head yes and you walk to a seat near where you were sitting as it is now occupied by the man who had his head knocked.

As you sit down keeping your AR covered by your coat he looks up and acknowledges you with a nod. Then with an unusual look on his face he asks, did you see a woman back there? You simply shrug a “no” and he puts his bandaged head back in his hand cuffed hands. It’s then that you notice his ankle is hand cuffed to the chair and that the guardsman in between the doors are watching him.

You ponder asking the man about his situation but feel it best to not get involved.

As the TV in the corner of the waiting room gets through its propaganda loop of the services and benefits of the hospital you notice it go to a screen of snow.. The local TV stations must still be off the air.

You still would like to know what it is that has everything screwed up. Why has “martial law” been declared? Who has attacked us? What is it the government and the military going to do?

Thomas moaned as the Dr. pushed and prodded at his stomach, reaching for your hand he asked “Where’s Trey?” and you reply that he is waiting in the waiting room. “I want Trey Mommy, can you get him?” I’ll see if I can go get himhunny, just let the Dr do his job.

OUCH! Thomas cried out as the Dr pushed on his lower abdomen. “Uh huh” said the Dr. “I think we have a case of acute appendicitis. The tests show it and the physical exam confirms it. We will prep him for surgery and get the issue under control asap.”

The first real decent bit of bed side manner the Dr has shown. Before he leave the Dr comes over and shakes my hand and says, he will be fine, don’t worry about it.

As the Dr. turns to the little nurse and hands her the chart he instructs her to make the necessary arrangements to get this boy feeling better.

The little nurse nods to the Dr and smiles at me, walks over to Thomas and puts her hand on his forehead and reassures him that he will be fine before leaving the room.

    Mommy, where is Trey?

Trisha is standing in front of me with the little nurse, I must have dozed off. As I snap to she is telling me that Thomas is going to have surgery for appendicitis and that he should be fine. She tells me that he wants to see me before they take him to the OR.

I look up to see the little nurse smiling and motioning for us to go back to the ER room.

I stand and pick up my stuff and follow her Trisha on my arm.

As we turn the corner into the hallway that Thomas’s room is on we see two orderly’s walking into his room.

As we walk in the door they are unhooking the monitors, and other items tethering Thomas’s bed to the wall. I walk up to the side of the bed, take Thomas’s hand as he looks me in the eye and tells me he will be a trooper and that he will be ok.

As he is readied to be wheeled out, his mother leans over and kisses him on the forehead.

We love you hunny, his mother reassures him as they wheel him out of the room and down the hall.

The little nurse turns to us and states, the OR is on the 3rd floor, there is a waiting area near the elevators and then points us in the direction of the elevators.

As we walk out of the room I hear the lady from earlier moaning.. She must be sedated. As I turn and look into her room I notice an armed security guard standing just inside her room. What could be wrong with her?

Trisha takes my hand and leads me towards the elevators holding tightly onto my hand and my arm. Worried for her boy and asking if there was any way to check on the girls.

I will get you settled and then make my way back home and return after I check in.

Trisha is told by the nurse at the window that Thomas’s surgery will only take about 45 minutes once they get him asleep. After that it will be about an hour in recovery for him to wake up and then she will be able to see him.

I say my goodbye, tell Trisha I will be back asap and hand her my small backup pistol and tell her to put it in her bag. She isn’t shocked by my actions but with a slight puzzled look on her face she puts it away. I explain that I will be back and give her a strong hug. As you turn and walk away and head for the elevator I feel a sense of accomplishment since Thomas is being cared for and things seem to be ok for now.

Walking out of the ER doors towards the truck the number of armed guards men has doubled and walking around the corner of the covered portion of the ER pull up I am confronted by a young lieutenant stepped in front of me and stated “You the DOD guy?” to which I replied, step aside lieutenant, I have business to attend to. As I helped him step aside two other guardsmen step in front of me rifles at the ready.

I stopped and turned to my right to where the lieutenant had been moved to and asked, what do you need lieutenant, I am in a hurry.

Just a minute of your time sir. This time the lieutenant showed a little respect. I need to verify your ID for the report. What report I ask? You were witness to an altercation between my men and a civilian over his wife getting treatment for some impalement injury.

I pull my ID and put it in front of the officers face close enough for him to read without any glasses should he have need for them but not have them on.

He reaches for it and about the time he tries to grab it I pulled it back informing him that my name should not be entered into any official report as I was never here.

The lieutenant was trying to gather credible witnesses to cover his butt for his men trating a civilian unjustly.

As I put my ID away and turn to the two guardsmen standing between me and my truck I turn my head towards them and cock my head as if to say “really” and the lieutenant says, that’s ok boys, let Mr. DOD leave. I am sure he will be back. We can question him then to which I smirk and walk through the guardsmen towards the truck.

Passing the Doctors house and turning on to our street I notice the lights come on. These rolling blackouts are more off then on now. Good thing the generator can keep the house warm when the power is off and since we had been given the extra fuel it should be ok for a while.

I shut off the truck and walk up to the door, knocking three times, pausing then twice more you turn and look behind you to see the neighbors across the street peeking out their windows.

As Mr. Grey opened the door with a curious look on his face and simply said “Thomas?” to which I replied He will be fine, they think he had appendicitis and they are operating on him.

Shelly peeking out from the hallway with a look of worry on her face catches my eye, I kneel and motion for her to come over. She comes up close and with her hands in one another droopy face and sleepy asks if Thomas is going to be ok. I take her hands and then she listens to me tell her he will be fine before hugging me and whispering thank you for taking care of us.

As I choke back the emotion I joke with her telling her she should be asleep and she runs off to bed all smiles that her brother will be ok.

Mary is standing in the doorway to the kitchen, she sort of smiles and then walks through the room saying she will check on her sister stopping to pat Mr. Grey on the shoulder and say thank you.

The lights go out and the girls are giggling in the bedroom. Mr. Grey offers me a cup of coffee and says “You look like you could use this.” To which I reply thank you and express my gratitude for him being there.

“I think I will run over and check on my place.” He says as he grabs his coat, “I figure you will want to go back to the hospital in a little while” to which I agree, Yeah, take your time, they said it will be at least a 45 minute operation then a while before he is awake.

As Mr. Grey goes to check outside the door he turns to me as asks, “anything else happen while you were gone?” to which I reply “brief you when you get back” And with a cheery “Roger that” Mr. Grey checks out the window and is gone.

Sitting my rifle and coat down I walked over to my chair and sat down for just a minute to rest. Emotionally and mentally exhausted I wondered how Thomas was and if Trisha was doing ok.

A knock on the door woke me, I had fallen asleep in my chair. As my eyes adjusted to the low light of the LED lantern which was left on in the kitchen I tried to remember where I put my rifle. No matter, I knew the shotgun was still by the door.

Grabbing the shotgun as I walked to the window I realized it was probably Mr. Grey returning. I peeked under the curtain and to my surprise it was not Mr. Grey, it was a Lieutenant.

I ducked back under the curtain trying to decide if I wanted to open the door or not. Figuring he would keep banging and wake the girls I decided to open the door with the shotgun at the ready..

The slightly frightened Lieutenant stepped back and asked if I would join the Colonel in the humvee. As I decided to just see what the Colonel wanted I noticed Mr. Grey walking up the lawn towards the house. He simply nodded and went on inside taking the shotgun from me as he passed me.

Getting in the humvee took me back to a time when these sneaky meetings were usually the start of a bad run taking anywhere from a week to a few months..
