As President Lincoln wrote in 1862, “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”330,000 Union soldiers died in the effort to end slavery. Tens of thousands more were wounded. Almost everyone from New York to Illinois has an ancestor with Civil War involvement. Buy me a beer and we'll call it even.
You're welcome.
There is that pesky history getting in the way of a good narrative…As President Lincoln wrote in 1862, “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that.”

I don't think that's ever been said? I'm not 100% sure but the understanding is people aren't naturally selfish but that capitalism incentivizes selfishness. Though either way they're just political talking points.
