My thoughts....Apple gave up the codes to save face AND fight terrorism. Suit dropped and Apple is still a bastion of free rights
    Add tinfoil as deemed fit

This thought crossed my mind as well. The only pitfall is now their security no longer is as secure as they might like the public to believe.

If you have unrestricted physical access to any computer you can get the data.. The FBI case was an attempt to get the courts to rule that the government can force back doors in crypto software..

If Apple doesn't sue to get the method of attack then they leave themselves open to lawsuits the next time some supermodel has their nude pics hacked.
    It's really very simple.

Apple can't just "give up the codes." They built the device without a backdoor. That's the issue. They specifically designed the phone software to be difficult to break into. Read about their group of core engineers and why they did what they did. The FBI either found an exploit in the software or found a way to brute force their way in (read: supercomputer).

Another example in the annals of "once something is justified, it becomes easier to justify."

FBI agrees to unlock another iPhone in homicide case - BBC News

People favored hacking one iPhone because terrorism.

Now, FBI has offered to use their new hack-tool on "normal" crimes.

(Part of me wonders if some NSA geek offered to help out the FBI for extra credits at the Foggy Bottom cafeteria.)
    Well that didn't take long.

The article leaves out key details, was a search warrant issued for devices, if so, what is the difference than Law Enforcement using a Locksmith to pick a lock on a safe where a search warrant was issued? Looking and the sky isn't falling.

At least they didn't force a private company to do it. They paid another private company to do it. Huzzah for the free market!

That's analogous to the FBI's final resolution. They got a warrant and hired a locksmith to break in. All is well in America.

It's not analogous to the original conundrum where the manufacturer of the lock was ordered to create a special pick to use to unlock their locks for this warrant and every warrant in the future where they might need to break into that lock.
