I have an acquaintance who is a long term upper management person who works for a large corporation. His management group has been rotating running third shift labor positions, as they cannot find workers.

It seems as though our gov't paying people not to work is becoming more and more of an issue.

    .......................................................................

From the government, here to help ya... blah blah blah

To get people to work you have to pay them more than not working pays. That means paying a dishwasher, stock boy, warehouse runner $30,000+/yr.

Wage inflation is baked into the cards, which i what I think the leftists goal is. Forget $15/hr min wage. That will be unnecessary because you won't be able to hire anyone for less than $20/hr.

add in higher taxes on businesses (and people) and that then means much higher prices for everything.

And of course inflation hurts the middle class more than anyone else. the poor are poor either way. The rich get richer and the middle class gets destroyed. I think that's the point. Bolsheviks hate the middle class. They are the enemy of Communism.
    long live the proliteriate!

this strikes sooo close to home.

when the shutdown came about. my bosses and i worked with our clients to find a way to keep our employees working. we went to 4hr shifts but paid them for the full 8 hrs.

we did this in part because the company was unable to pay any kind of hazard pay & we were considered essential.

two of my employees were angry because they wanted to be laid off so they could take advantage of the $600/week unemployment benifits.

one of the two only wanted to be paid for 4 hrs a day so they could qualify. they applied for UI without letting me know. the company denied their claim (of course), and i fired them.
End of the day, businesses have to actually earn the money they pay their employees, and will never be able to compete with the federal government printing themselves free money to pay people to sit at home and not work. This is basic economics. Businesses do not get to print their own money. They cannot be made to pay wages as though they are able to print their own money.

Yet the lazy, brain dead socialists of this country continue to act as though every restaurant owner has mountains and mountains of profit hidden in a cave somewhere that they refuse to share with workers because they're such a greedy Scrooge. Reality is what little they had saved was all burned last year trying to keep their staff employed while the government was making it illegal to open your restaurant.

I know of a factory here in town that offers 16/18 bucks an hour to start and they cant get anyone. Even hard to get people to interview and this is to run a forklift. So no it is not " people have found better jobs" argument is lets just say it.... Sh**.

We had to hire 1 new front desk for our office and we pay 17.00 with just good manners and being nice we will teach you the rest. You know how long that took to fill ? 3 freaking months.
i'm having the same problem finding staff. we don't pay that much but for the type of work ww do it's adequate. we even raised the starting pay by $2/hr to entice people with no luck.

i see a deeper reason behind paying people more money to stay home than they make working. the money WILL dry up soon and the lazy people will find that the "free" money is not free.

The government has more or less set the minimum wage with the enhanced unemployment. Right now in Indiana unemployment is $690 a week (pre-tax) which is $17.25 an hour. Under the original stimulus passed way back early in 2020 unemployment was $990 a week or $24.75. The math is pretty easy

Correct. While reinstating the need to look for work is a good start, getting the benefits back to the original length of time and cutting off the "extra" money are necessary.

The unemployment is enticing right now, but what about benefits, preparing for retirement, etc.?
I thinks its overly optimistic to expect that someone who gets a raise on unemployment is thinking more than 2 weeks into the future.

...and remember when Obamacare let 26 year-olds be on their parents' insurance? I remember seeing a guy in the dentist's office with his partner (maybe wife) and child explaining to the staff that his insurance was under his Dad's name. I was not impressed.

That foolish move, and it's now set in stone acceptance, took 5-8 years away from the maturity of all American youth.

Even if your young adult wasn't allowed by you to participate in the boondoggle, they are completely surrounded by those who will not gain responsibility until they have to pay the bill.

    Indeed.

Thankfully, my 23 year old is surrounded by other people who, believe it or not, are responsible for their own health insurance because it is a fringe benefit of their employment- 100%. What a throwback.

I have no such illusions about the other 3, but they shall not stay on my insurance when they are done with education and working. I can't control who is around them.

All the people who worked those crappy service jobs went and found better jobs during the shutdown.
Hey, cool! That means we can take an axe to unemployment because everybody found a better, higher paying job already so nobody should really be affected by that. We won't need a higher minimum wage for the same reasons

    But, but in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

the only issue I have with axing unemployment as it stands right now is that there is a significant chunk of the population that gets no sick leave and whose employers are too large to qualify for the government tax credit sick leave.

So getting rid of unemployment right now puts us in danger of going back to having sick people working because they have no other choice.

i know many here think covid is fake but I’ve had it and had to take several weeks of work off unpaid. I’m very grateful we had the unemployment during that time.

Mandate sick leave and get rid of Unemployment. I got no issue with that

Sounds like they got what they wanted but unfortunately they didn't leave you a choice.
It's simple, the "gooberment" as one put it is using OUR tax money to buy votes and we should be screaming bloody murder about it. Call, write, email the Goobers in DC and tell them we understand their little scheme and we're mad as hell about it.

I have a small body shop. 90 percent of my work is fleet vehicles such as utility trucks and vans. I also do spray in bedliners. I've tried to hire kids to start out learning at $10 an hour with 0 results. I've even tried $15 just as a going rate for anyone that would just give it a shot. I just simply cannot pay a guy $20 an hour for me to teach them and not really accomplish any more work. Some kids are willing but expect way to much for no experience and I've only had one adult actually take the job. He worked for 3 weeks and quit because he didn't want to do anymore than sweep and take out trash. The day I handed him a grinder was his last day. Never saw him again.

My younger son would love to learn that trade at $10/hr....but the commute would be a bear.

Or get rid of the government requirements, the forced unemployment insurance etc.

Place the responsibility for one's own life and health and success and failure squarely on each individual and keep government out of it. Govt has been given no powers to be an insurance company. No powers to be a nationalized charity.

Skin in the game is an amazing thing. It changes behaviors and for the better.

I don't have a problem with unemployment as it was designed to be. That is to provide somewhat of a safety net if someone, through no fault of their own (company downsizing, closing, etc., not being fired for just cause) find themselves unemployed. I collected it for 3 months myself when the company I was working for went out of business. Fortunately that company gave us plenty of notice and incentives to stay on to the end. In that time, I began applying for my current job, and it took nearly a full year to finally get hired. Old company closed September 30, 2009 and I started my current job January 2, 2010. I got a severance package, but the unemployment allowed me to cover my basic needs, while my severance package covered other expenses and bills.

I am not in favor of unlimited benefits, nor this "enhancement" that does nothing but encourage people not to go back to work.

So if one guy on my crew gets COVID and the rest are forced to quarantine ( not able to come to work) should they just starve? Screw them right?

The government has been an insurance company for about 100 years now. That’s never gonna change.

I can tell you the result of no paid sick leave during this pandemic since I watched it first hand. Guys come to work sick and don’t say anything since they gotta eat, then next thing you know then entire plant is sick. It got so bad this last fall that the plant just started sending people randomly for a covid test in order to keep it in check.
