So I am talking to my son who is a cop about this shooting. I say they should have just tasered him. My son replies that none of the cops at the scene were carrying tasers. I am like you got to be kidding me. Then in todays Sun Times there is an article that has a quote by Anita Alvarez. She is quoted "if any of the officers had been carrying a taser, we would not be here today. Out of eight officers, not one officer was carrying a taser". Not sure I agree with the we would not be here today part. The way the cop came out of his vehicle and started firing. I just find it odd that out of eight cops, no one had a taser.

Here's a report from soon after it happened, before all the details were out:

Here is what the press reported based on what they were told by police sources:
    ...

The responding officers didn’t have a Taser. Waiting for one to arrive, they followed the boy in their squad car, as he walked a block to 41st and Pulaski.

A second squad car arrived. The boy again refused to drop the knife. The police tried to use the two vehicles to box him in against a construction fence on Pulaski. He punctured a tire and damaged the front windshield of one of the police cars. Officers got out of their vehicles. The boy approached them with the knife in his hand. One of the officers shot him in the chest.

Yeah, 2nd degree "murder" which apparently means that the officer must've believed his life was in danger, but his actions in shooting were unreasonable.

(I am not an Illinois lawyer; I can't explain how both of those things might be true.)

Max 20 year sentence, instead of max life sentence. (He wasn't going to get a life sentence anyway.)

Bad bad bad precedent for gun carriers, most especially cops.
This case will heighten scrutiny to an indefensible level.

Videos will be examined in super slo-mo.
In this officer's case, a guilty charge was brought against him for each and every of the 16 shots, one by one.

Imagine what they would do to an armed citizen.
A licensed gun carrier would be branded a vigilante murderous renegade.

If this had been a licensed gun carrier, there never would have been any doubt about it being a good or bad shoot. There was debate about how much of a threat McDonald was to justify the initial shots. There really wasn't any justification for shooting him while he lay bleeding to death on the ground.

I've reminded some people that the actual number of rounds fired isn't the relevant part though. If McDonald had been moving towards someone in a threatening manner, and the officer shot him 16 times before he went down things would be different. Once McDonald was down, he should not have kept shooting him. I have a feeling his brain had pretty much shutdown and he was going on animal instinct while he was.

    I agree with that.
