So I am talking to my son who is a cop about this shooting. I say they should have just tasered him. My son replies that none of the cops at the scene were carrying tasers. I am like you got to be kidding me. Then in todays Sun Times there is an article that has a quote by Anita Alvarez. She is quoted "if any of the officers had been carrying a taser, we would not be here today. Out of eight officers, not one officer was carrying a taser". Not sure I agree with the we would not be here today part. The way the cop came out of his vehicle and started firing. I just find it odd that out of eight cops, no one had a taser.
Here's a report from soon after it happened, before all the details were out:
Here is what the press reported based on what they were told by police sources:
...
The responding officers didn’t have a Taser. Waiting for one to arrive, they followed the boy in their squad car, as he walked a block to 41st and Pulaski.
A second squad car arrived. The boy again refused to drop the knife. The police tried to use the two vehicles to box him in against a construction fence on Pulaski. He punctured a tire and damaged the front windshield of one of the police cars. Officers got out of their vehicles. The boy approached them with the knife in his hand. One of the officers shot him in the chest.
