How dare everyone receive a basic education, affordable housing, basic nutrition, basic healthcare, etc.

    Insane. Impractical. Unsustainable.

No one has a right to those things. You have a right to pursue them but you are not entitled to receive, possess, or consume them.

If you are a Christian (and maybe other religions too, I'm just no authority on them), then you will want to assist those who cannot obtain them themselves. But for me to force my neighbors, by rule of law, to do as I would do would be me forcing my morality down their throats.

Please define "honestly" in this context. Are you arguing that every billionaire has "honestly" earned every single dime they have?

Sure it can. Luxury taxes have existed for a long time. The tax on a 24,000 sq. ft. house should be higher than that of a 2,400 sq. ft. house, or a 1,200 sq. ft. condo. Kobe beef should be taxed at a rate higher than Grade A (or lower grades).

All these arguments are great, when posed by someone living on the system!

I have a pocket version of the Constitution on my desk. I used to carry it with me.
When a Millenial or lefty or a just not so well informed youngster would start spouting off about....."we have the right to".....I would hand them the booklet and ask they find that right in it. Oh, and please hi-lite it for me.

They pointed out the "good and plenty" clause, didn't they? :D

    It's right here:

US Constitution - Article 1 said:
    The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

See? It's right there guys. RIGHT there. My general welfare depends on me having the Springfiled M1A SOCOM 16 I've been wanting but not so much that I'll pay $1600 of my own money for (well, plus 10K rounds of 7.62 nato).

You meant "particular" or "specific" instead of "general".

"General" applies to a class or group, not an individual. Now, if "common defense" still relied on militias vs. a standing army, you might have a valid argument for the govt issuing you said rifle and ammo.

You haven't seen my waist size. I might be considered a group.

If everyone's entitled to reasonable healthcare, food, and housing, certainly they're entitled to reasonable, taxpayer funded guns and ammo. At least that's how I read the good and plenty clause along with the 2nd Amendment.

Indiana's gubernatorial embarrassment has, once again, been slapped upside his empty noggin by the courts, as the Seventh Circuit ruled against his asinine withholding of federal funds for the resettlement of Syrian refugees in Indiana. Maybe now he'll get the message.

Court strikes down Pence argument for state ban on Syrian refugees | WISH-TV

Not a chance. Sister Christian will double down, citing "government overreach in a state issue".

(But he'll keep those sweet, sweet federals dollars...)

As my post #1247 points out, if we still relied in state militias for the "common defense" instead of a standing army, you'd likely have a valid argument for a govt-supplied firearm.

There's a saying among survivalists that goes like this:

"3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food." To me, it makes common sense (as well as sense for those with religious beliefs) to provide a necessary food, housing and healthcare. Failing to do so causes people to consume poor-quality food (because it's the only food that's available - see "food deserts" - or affordable), and to use expensive (and limited) ER medical services for routine outpatient care (or to avoid care altogether, necessitating expensive ER care when their condition worsens).

You seem to keep a rather fictionalized sort of "survivalists" hanging around inside your imagined reality. Most actual ones are pretty independent, and wouldn't take kindly to folks asserting an entitlement to help themselves to others' rations.

In fact, people who think the way you do are a big part of the reason why survivalists hoard bullets.

Then let a country a couple miles closer to Syria feed, house, and fix boo-boos for them?
