Ohh boy. Do you really want the answer? I am an M14/M1 Carbine owner. So I could aford 3 or 4 M16/AR types (will just call it the M16 from here on out)

Because the M16 is a freaking Mattel toy!!!!!!!!!

Direct Impingement. Don't get me started on this. On every shot the rifle is barfing all over it's insides. Who wants this? On the M14 all the dirty stuff is kept in a easily cleanable stainless steel cylinder up front. Not in the internals of your rifle! The M1 Carbine is even better about this with it's short stroke system.

The original caliber 5.56x45 is a damn varmint round. I won't get the caliber argument going again, but I have little faith in this round. I like 30 carbine better then I do like 5.56. Yes I know there are 300s and 6.5/6.8s that fit the AR15 platform, but by the time you pay for them, you might as well moved up to 7.62x51

The M4 has another issue, the barrel is too damn short, even in civilian length at 16 or in mill form at 14.5. You loose too much. CQB, clearing buildings you say? RoE bull honk. Want to know how WWII guys cleared a building? They fired 30 cal THRU the building to "clear it".

After having the M14 and the M1 carbine, I just can't warm up to the M16.

Call me an old school crusty curmudgeon and your right. But I will stay with 30 cal wood and steel rifles. Large bore rifles are what made this country what it is today.
I own rifles that were made to KILL communist heathens. Not wound them.

Exactly! Drive-by shooting? I'll just kill your car! :):

I built one. I love military guns. I wanted a M1 more and my brother wanted at AR more...we traded. I love historic Military guns more. I also like guns with wood furniture. Of the guns in my safe...I have 0 without some sort of wood furniture. I even spent an extra 80 bucks to get a laminated pink cricket for my daughter rather than a cheap plastic looking one. (Yes, I own 'plastic' pistols and don't hate the thought of plastic on a gun...just prefer wood on rifles).

I have been debating buying another one. At least a stripped lower or 2. Then build them into something. I am also thinking of putting wood furniture on it. I've seen a few that don't look horrible. Expensive...but not horrible. I'll probably, if she gets into it, give my daughter a AR for her 16th birthday. I'm thinking, if she stays into it...a pink lamninated 10/22 for her 12th bday(4 yrs away)

What I'd REALLY like? A 7 .62x39 AR. I love that round and my favorite rifle is my SKS.

    Reading the .30 caliber guy above...I do like .30 cal's more and may build a AR in .308...but I REALLY want a M1a!! :)

Don't own one, never will. The AR has got to be the most over hyped gun in history. Give me a good quality bolt gun over the plastic toy crap any day. Overpriced (by far) for what they are. an old AK or SKS will outlive and outperform in the dirt and grime any day of the week.
Not trying to stir an argument, but I don't understand why folks call the AR a plastic toy or a Mattel gun. The only parts on the gun that aren't metal are the stock and grip. I don't count the handguard cause hardly anyone keeps the factory one.

Mattel made M16s during vietnam I believe...yep. Those are probably some of the most valuable M16s I'd bet!

I had an AMD65 which is a Hungarian AK folder. I sold it to a friend to fund my AR build. The AR was really nice, accurate, and reliable. But I couldn't shake that AMD. I sold the AR and bought the AMD back. For whatever reason I jut didn't love the AR. Great gun, but just didn't do it for me like the AMD.

I do not own one because I cannot afford to feed the thing. I have nothing against the AR platform. I used to have a Colt 6920 but sold it. IMHO one cannot FULLY enjoy shooting the AR with less than 300-400 rounds at ones disposal. Well the cost of said rounds ranges between $200-$300. My wallet just cannot handle that every time I want to shoot. Again, that is just my opinion and reason I do not own an AR.

I really hope nobody thought that I was trying to argue. You shoot what you want I'll shoot what I want. I don't care for the AR platform personally but if you like it knock yourself out.

Personally I hate the AK itself because of who invented it and because it was used for revolutions around the world. But if you like it buy three or four them and use them. With all the mil surp ammo that's around It's a good way to get your range time and more cheaply.

I don't have one, no plans to get one. I shoot them well and know that they are accurate and reliable, just don't want one. The funny thing is, I have never had a AK owner ask me why I don't have an AK, or a M1A owner ask me why I don't have one of those. The only people who ever question my choice of rifle, are AR owners. The only people who question my choice of handgun, are Glock owners.

They always want to talk about it, point out why their rifle/handgun is better, and convince me to change. I can't count how many times I have heard "just try mine, you will see." They strike me as a bit insecure in their choices.

Comments not pointed at the original poster in any way. Just an observation.

Never owned one, never will. I was issued one for a year back in 1968 but I guess that doesn't count as own. A real rifle has a wood stock and a handle on the bolt, the sights go out to 2000 meters. You have fun shooting real rifles.
