Are these sworn law enforcement officers, sworn "special deputies", or non-sworn security officers? Most non-sworn campus "security" officers are unarmed. However, most of the sworn campus "police" departments that I'm familiar with are armed.

These are "campus security" officers. No, they do not carry. Even the ones who are permanently employed there.

Can you supply a list of schools in Indiana that have these "tanks" in service? Our two schools count on either the County Deputies or the P.D. to respond to calls for service.

In larger cities, it used to be common for Beat Cops to be on foot patrol in every neighborhood. They (the officers) were considered members of the community. They helped maintain the peace and order by their constant presence and intimate knowledge of the community that they worked in. People KNEW them and TRUSTED them. They werent faceless squad cars cruising through with windows up every once in a while. As strange as I may sound, if PD's would stop trying to amass all the "toys and treats", they could afford to hire more officers.

Being a tatically trained and equipped reactionary force does NOTHING to prevent crime and in turn does NOTHING but provide the criminal with a period of time with which he/she is able to carry out said crime. Allowing Citizens to excersise their rights and protect themselves will not only shorten that time, the knowledge that each and every person around the perp is potentiallly armed will in many cases prevent the need for any reactionary force in the first place.

Put more boots on the ground instead of equipment, involve the citizens, become members of the community and entire community will in turn help police itself.

I hope that didn't come off strong. I would really like to have some time to have officer to walk a beat, per se. Many of the guys that I work with do just that. The real problem is that we just don't have time...really. We did a study last year. A typical officer needs to be busy for 25 minutes per hour. That leaves him with 35 minutes to patrol and work on projects or problems within his beat. The problem is that the study pointed out that we are busy almost 45 minutes an hour. It's not bad time management (or polishing our tank, joke), it's just that we are covered with runs for service.

No, you didn't. And I understand as well. I was speaking in generalities, of course, and not targeting your city ,Evansville, I believe, of which I know very little about.

I do know that for some reason, many county departments have spent a crap ton of money on Mobile Command Centers and HMMV assault vehicles. Where the $$ comes from, I do not know. But in my mind, it could have been better
spent on hiring more officers, promoting more public interaction and Education programs, or something along those lines. I seems like on the whole, the only times these half million dollar (or more) behemoths move anywhere is when it county fair time.

Our money comes from the home tax base system. We get about $2 per ticket we write, the rest goes to the county courts. The 2.00 we receive goes to our training fund. Training funds don't last long.

None of it makes sense. Why someone would take the life of another outside of a life threatning self defense action.
Irahm, I can't believe the security there isn't allowed to be armed. That itself should be a red flag.

I know. I have talked to the dapartmental heads on this issue. The one school is in the county and response time is good with the county P.D. But, still you have to look at the personnel. Most of the guards from both schools are mostly students making extra money (no excuse). I think that bot schools are big enough and wealthy enough to certify a campus police department.

That expression you quoted isn't a knock on LEO at all...It's just a reminder that everyone is safer when law abiding citizens aren't disarmed.

You are right and I apologize. I get frustrated when I can't help as much as what I can. I'll send a rep. to apologoze. I'll go to any length to help kids out (long story, I'll explain sometime).

As far as the application, I am serious. We could always use people who look outside the box (within reason) to make things better.

    take care.

Thanks for the idea Lonnie, but I don't want to move to Evansville. I might have to arrest TF.

I don't know how he stays out of jail. Nothing but trouble, that one. You guys should have him under constant surveillance. Never know when he might cause more trouble.

At least you would be trainable. Most of the people applying now have never picked up a weapon before.

Well hello Irahm! I got a kick out of your posts and you are right. There are periods of time when Officers don't have the time to pee or get a drink. We are "calls for service" driven and it would be nice to have enough Officers to do pro-active things. It is not possible for LEO's to be everywhere all of the time which is a reason I always have my gun for my family, citizens and my own protection. I appreciate what you and the guys/girls on second shift motor patrol are doing. Keep up the good work and have a mint hot chocolate from McDonalds on me the next time you are free. Taste!

    this is crazy

well this was embarrassing for him im sure..
When I was in college....our campus safety officer had guns, until one night one of them was investigating an alarm in the admin building...and shot at what they thought was an intruder. It turned out to be a statue of Abe Lincoln, and they managed to shoot off his foot. After that, no more guns.

I agree completely with Kirk. Relying on campus cops to protect you is a waste of time, and a foolish endeavor. By the time they get there, you are dead. It's time to let students AND employees protect themselves, rather than denying them that RIGHT.

Now now ... it only makes sense that LEO's are members of Indiana Gun Owners because WE OWN GUNS sillybutt. It's also a good way to have civil dialog on very heated topics although I'm going to make it a policy to stay away from heated topics. I've said it a thousand times "if I want to argue, I'll go to work and get paid for arguing".

I also hope to learn a few things while I'm on this site and maybe give back a little with my experiences.
