So after the owl had it pinned a raccoon came along. There was a scuffle, and the bandit was scared, but aggressive. He grabbed the rabbit by a leg as the owl took off with it in his claws. He held on tight for a few hops into the air, being to much dead weight for the wise owl to maintain flight. Then on the last free ride got a nasty peck right in stomach as they crashed into the earth. Let go and fled, being the fat bandit he did not need the meal THAT bad.

The owl not sure his fight was over took off with the head, but staying close by keeping an eye on his prey, eating his snack. Just when he was ready to reclaim his prize, he saw the bandit hiding nearby, ready to pounce. Being so wise he decided it was not worth the risk. He made a load of racket and feigned several attacks on the would be fat thief as the sun was coming up, because he was annoyed. Then sat perched, half napping with one eye open on his prey.

!Danger! Human alert. Cease fire cease fire! We will fight over the rabbit again when he is gone. They agreed.

Both hid as they noted your arrival.

My place, down further south, has had quite the uptick in hawks and owls the last few years.

I've been watching a couple of small bunnies hanging out in my garden at night, letting them grow until the end of season. About a week ago, gone no signs. Couple days ago, buzzards on something by the road. Bunny parts...

I think a bird of any size would have carried it away. As would coyote or fox. Cat would have drug it under a car, shed etc. Opossum maybe, though they usually start on the other end. Racoon, maybe...

I walk the property multiple times a day and usually with our dog. I have neither seen nor heard any canines...and it seems the coyote population has disappeared, never hear them snymore.
