Lincoln did free the slaves. Emancipation Proclamation. We’ve all heard of that. But his timing was more strategic. I think it was his plan all along for the US to end up without slavery. It’s disingenuous to claim otherwise. But. 180K blacks fought in the civil war by the war’s end. Half of them were slaves from the Confederacy that got free and joined the fight. Lincoln needed more soldiers. And blacks that fought added 10%. I think the need sped up the process that would have happened anyway. Eventually.
