Walked to the northwest and southwest corners of the property for the first time in a while. There is more firewood opportunities than I thought before, but in places I've never driven the gator. Those places will be accessible after the loggers are done harvesting what they've marked but no word yet on when they're going to come in.

I'm glad that you bagged that BIG one, and the others that I saw in the Morel thread !
I figured that the season was over .... but maybe I'd better head back to my cabin.

Just to keep the thread on track (firewood), I do a small amount of bucking & splitting ..... but it's mainly for our campfires. The cabin has an old wood potbelly, but if it's cold, I generally use a propane heater.

    Thanks!

The inverter (mini-split air conditioner) is also a heater but we've not tried to use it to heat our cabin. We rely on the stove for that chore.

    That's a fantastic setup !
Our place is very basic .... really, more like a hunting shack, than a modern cabin.
This old pot belly still works, but it's used gently these days.

I can’t identify this tree. The leaves look like beech to me, but the bark isn’t smooth enough. Any thoughts?

I agree. The bark threw me. It’s very smooth up in the canopy but patterned like a walnut down the trunk, except gray with the ridges knocked down. Too bad the storm took it, they’re not very common from what I’ve read.
They get a canker that distorts and sometimes kills them. I have one on my farm that is slick and canker free. They are pretty rare.

Guess I officially started on the 2023 season. Trimmed a handful of 4-6 inch limbs to give the garden a tad more sun. Also got 2 24” logs from a stump of a tree felled a few years ago. Dang those logs are heavy. Will get the small stuff into the woodshed today. Will split the logs in the fall.
