I know it's a little early, but I'm meeting my dad for dinner, so I thought I'd start a Father's Day thread. It's open forum, post what you want: thoughts, stories, memories, whatever.

Things I learned from my dad:

    • How to swing a hammer.
    • How to cut a board.
    • How to set priorities.
    • How to give a good hand shake.
    • How to tie a tie.
    • How to change a flat tire.
    • How to look a man in the eye, give my word, and keep it.

    Best memory with my dad:

December 5, 2002: The day I gave my dad a kidney.

    Saddest memory with my dad:

September 24, 2009: The day I lost my son. My dad reached his arm around me and just held me as I cried.

I never heard my dad cuss growing up.

    Never heard him lie.

Never missed a day of work.

He never missed any sports game I ever played. Ever.

Bought my Dad an iPod Touch for Father's Day. I can't wait to see the look on his face, lol.

He enjoys music and making/editing videos so once I explain that he will be able to take them with him and show them to people I think he'll like it. But that first look on his face is gonna be priceless!

    Dad wasn't perfect,
but he always got the job done.

    Dad wasn't eloquent,
but there was no mistaking what he meant.

    Dad wasn't highly educated,
but he taught me more than any school ever could.

    Dad wasn't rich,
but I never lacked what I needed.

    Dad wasn't mean,
but I knew better than to cross him.

    Dad rarely got emotional,
but it sure meant something when he did.

Dad didn't have a lot of friends,
but the ones he had he could count on.

Dad never cried at sappy movies,
but he did when he had to shoot his own dog.

Dad never taught me how to choose a mechanic, plumber, or roofer,
but he taught me how to fix the car, sink or roof.

Dad never gave me a car, expensive gifts, or a credit card,
but he did give me a work ethic and the confidence to do for myself.

    Dad didn't spoil me,
but he sure tried to spoil his grandchildren.

Dad couldn't stay with us because he was called home,
    but he will live forever.

I'll see to that. Because now I'm the Dad.
It's my turn to do my best to be what he was to me.

I can only hope to do it as well.

Happy Dad's Day to all you Dads out there, take your son shooting this weekend! My best memories of my Dad whom just passed away on Easter Sunday this year was our fishing trips to Canada, and he always came to my football and basketball games home or away, always...

Most of the things that my Dad taught me have already been mentioned here and much more eloquently than I will be able to manage but here goes.

How to support my family - Get up every morning, afternoon or night and go to work and get the job done.

How to give the boss a fair days work for a fair days pay.

How to get to any sporting event that his kids are in regardless of how long he was at work.

    How to fix almost anything.

How to drive a stick (Never did get double clutching down)

And many many more that don't come to mind this early in the morning.

Dad will be 84 years old here in a few days and he still drives himself around, opens his shop everyday, cuts firewood to burn in his shop in the winter, plants a small garden, has his girlfriend (since Mom passed) and in general is the best Dad anyone can ever have.

I love you Pop. Happy Fathers Day.

My dad taught me so much. Told me in my early teens I was going to learn everything the boys did. I learned to service the car, change tires and oil. I had to work to keep my car, making car & insurance payments. I learned how to swing a hammer, use a screw driver and mow the yard.
My dad has been there for all the trials and tribulations in my life.
He supported me in my move to Indianapolis, although he still tries to get me to move home now and then. ;)
I am my fathers baby girl. If I called today and said "Daddy I need....." He'd make it happen. Maybe a trip to Plymouth is necessary tomorrow. if not a phone call will suffice.

My dad taught me to be a good father by showing me what not to do. He was the perfect example of how not to be a good father.

I hardly know him. I firmly believe this will be the worst father's day of my life. Going to go see him at his camp. He has cancer and this may be the last time I see him alive.

Be the better man. Being angry and upset never solved anything...... if it was my dad and we did not have a good relationship and he was on his death bed I would try and make things right...... not that I would not try to do so before hand.

Everything my Father pass on to me was by pictures. He was a proud USMC and Indianapolis policeman. I never knew him because he passed away when I was 3. I decided that I was going to be the best father to my daughter and she has turned out great.

Dad's been gone since '87, but I still miss him...

My stepson just gave me my Father's Day present. A cool card, and the movie The Book of Eli. Very cool!

BTW, great song Fletch, means a lot to me because I "..wasn't there that morning, when my father passed away" and there is a lot I wish I could have/would have said to him...
