Interesting that poll in old school MSM, while at the same time, it appears other polls have DeSantis within 10 points of Trump, already, in Iowa:

One poll taken in mid May showed DeSantis polling at 24 percent compared to Trump’s 48 percent — a 24-point deficit for the governor. However, a subsequent poll of 655 respondents taken from May 30 to June 1, right after DeSantis’s swing through the state, showed that margin has narrowed to ten points, with Trump garnering 39 percent to DeSantis’ 29 percent.

Funny you would say that since the Trump admin's policies were crib notes from the pages of NR.

I guess every organization doesn't aspire to Gateway Pundit's "greatness". :)
So Trump stole AF from the pages of NR. Some people who call him Hitler that hate AF and MAGA probably might say he got it from Mein Kampf.

It’s not even officially primary season yet. But, it supports my observation that the launch was not successful. He launches. Trump got the bump.

This issue could or at least should have some sway with a lot of gun owners if DeSantis keeps highlighting this criticism of Trump. DeSantis has a leg up on Trump and the 2nd Amendment issue.

"DeSantis also was interviewed by former National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch in which she asked him about "the idea of taking the guns first and going through due process second."

"That's unconstitutional," DeSantis told Loesch. "It violates the Second Amendment, but I think even more important it violates the Fifth Amendment because they can't take anything from you without due process. It's not just firearms."

statements like that are meaningless to most of his supporters here.

Trump: I wanna ban the AR15.
Average INGO Free Thinker: That doesn't seem constitutional.
Average INGO Trumper: Shut up you treasonous Biden supporter. Only Biden supporters want people to have the AR Only deep states own the AR15, true patriots own modern sporting rifles. Its important that he ban the AR15 so we can own the libs, its part of a 66 dimensional chess game you can't possibly understand. SAD!

DeSantis is having trouble staying within 10 points of Trump in his home state - and he's trending strongly in the wrong direction

Yeah I forgot that Trump once supported an "assault weapon" ban in 2000.

"Trump in 2000 said he took a middle ground, supporting a ban on assault weapons though generally opposing gun control".

But then he changed his position in 2015.

"Trump in 2015, however, was dismissive of calls to regulate assault rifles which, he said, are common semi-automatic weapons popular with many Americans."

But then he turns around and steps on his Johnson in 2018 with the "take the guns first" debacle.

Trump is all over the place on the 2nd Amendment.

Feb. 28, 2018: During the televised meeting with lawmakers where he made the "take the guns first" comment Trump seemed open to supporting the assault weapons ban proposed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.

“This is when the 10-year assault weapon ban was in — how incidents and deaths dropped. When it ended, you see it going up. So Senator Murphy —,” Feinstein said

"So we’ll take a look at it,” Trump interjected.

"Feb. 28, 2018: Trump in that same meeting with congressional leaders also proposed raising the age limit for buying assault rifles from 18 years old to 21."

"March 12, 2018: Trump seemed to back away from his statements a month prior saying that he would leave it to states to set an age limit for buying assault rifles."

    But wait there's more..

Feb. 21, 2018: During a listening session with teachers and students following the deadly Parkland, Fla. high school mass shooting now-president Trump said, “We’re going to be very strong on background checks. We’re going to be doing very strong background checks.”

    Yet again....

Feb. 28, 2018: In a room full of lawmakers Trump declared “You’re scared of the NRA.” During the televised meeting, the president called for a “powerful” bill on background checks to address mental illness.

Then it appears he changes his position on background checks a year later.

Feb. 26, 2019: Nearly a year later, and two days before the House passed sweeping gun legislation that would require universal background checks for most gun purchases or transfers, Trump threatened a presidential veto on the legislation if it passed Congress.

    Back to this...

Feb. 4, 2016: In a campaign video released on Facebook, Trump posted bluntly, ““I won’t let them take away our guns!!

Now the infamous "take the guns first and worry about due process later" debacle enters into the picture.

Feb, 28, 2018: In a meeting with lawmakers, Trump said, “I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida. He had a lot of firearms. They saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time. So you could do exactly what you’re saying, but take the guns first, go through due process second.”

So that would seem to indicate that when he takes the time to look about these things, he always comes down on the correct side of the issue, and that when confronted by bad legislation he was willing to veto

I just see a strategy of delay on congress' worst impulses, fealty to federalism and moving to reject bad legislation

What he says is worse than what he does. You should review the concepts of 'pacing' and 'leading' as they relate to persuasion. Scott Adams wrote quite a bit on it in 2015-16

Then after taking flak for that he pivots to this..

March 12, 2018: Trump called for all states to adopt Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), also known as “red-flag laws” which allow law enforcement, with approval from a court, to remove firearms from individuals who are a demonstrated threat to themselves or others and temporarily to prevent individuals from purchasing new firearms.

You can try to explain it away as you wish but I still see everything that I've posted as examples of being all over the map flip flopping around on the 2nd Amendment. No consistancy whatsoever depending on who he's talking to.
