Under federal law, the minimum age to buy a handgun is 21, so long as it is bought from a federally
licensed dealer (11). However, that age drops to 18, when the handgun is purchased through a
private sale (12). The age to buy a long gun is also 18 (13). Age restrictions to buy a firearm should be
consistent. As mayor, I will proactively advocate to increase the age required to purchase any
firearm from 18 to 21, no matter what kind of sale occurs.

Does he not realize that private firearm sales are not required to be reported? How will they know if someone 18 buys a handgun in a private sale?
