110 yds 9 yo got it done today with the in-line it was NOT easy. she shot back a little was a gut shot…….. tracked for over a mile…. And many hours met ALL the neighboring land owners. It was a FIASCO she had inline I had traditional…… she shot I went for a second shot when the deer bedded down…….(you know what they say about hindsight lol) I had 2 bad primers then 3rd shot a hang fire reloaded all while 10yds from this deer…… then I had another bad primer then I had a primer pop and fail to ignite the charge. THEN finally I got a shot off on the deer this time I missed I think I loaded it badly in haste or maybe tree or maybe just pulled the shot since I was so frustrated with the primers….and she ran…. And ran and ran. Shot 7:45 recovered 3:00 But luckily a bunch of good people helped get it done today. And I guess it’s true gut shot deer go for water.

Congratulations on the deer but that sucks. Been there and I feel for you both. Glad you found her. Nice doe!
Thanks, yeah it did suck… not so much the trailing. My daughters learned ALOT. Heck I learned a lot. The only part for me that sucks is the deer suffering. Her shot was only off by like an inch because the deer was quartering towards hard judging by the entry/exit. It is Hard with the muzzle loader telling what happens after the shot with that big plume of smoke.

one of the things I don’t understand is we had BRIGHT red blood. And it was very very consistent. But after processing there was no lung or heart touched.

    Hit an artery.
Yeah I guess I thought an artery bleeding the way it was she would have gone down quicker. It was a long track…. But from what I’m remembering there were 6-10 pools of blood. and then just a consistent dripping the entire way.

Adrenaline will keep a deaf deer going. I shot one in the liver once and it ran almost a mile. Was blowing chunks of it out. Blood the whole way. Lost that one in a swamp. I even let her lay up for almost an hour before I started tracking. Once I bumped her she never stopped. Sucked.

I'm still trying for a buck. Sat last night, had a doe with two fawns and then a small buck come out.

I'm headed back out this evening, probably same spot as long as the wind doesn't switch to easterly before then.

Serious question, I truly do not have a clue on this

Is there any indication that the combination of harvested deer and those lost to predation and disease are negatively impacting overall deer numbers? Is the overall deer population in the state of Indiana stagnant, or increasing?

Anecdotally there seems to be the same number around my area though they are obviously being driven into smaller areas with all of the development which can also too easily affect perception of numbers.

I do believe you can get all that information on the DNR website. I seem to remember that being a tracked statistic.

I think Indiana has a deer population from 600,000-700,000 deer before season starts. Then hunters put a dent in the population. Poachers and vehicles get their share.

From what I have seen this year, definitely not shocked in the increased antlered harvest. Where I hunt, I usually see the same 1-2 bucks throughout the season. This year I know I saw at least 10 unique bucks.
