I finally got around to reading the bill in full. It's a funding bill actually. It defines where funds come from, what they can be used for and that includes the inserted language regarding arming trained school staff. As currently written a sponsored staff member must complete a MMPI-2 test (mental assessment). It contains language that sets a minimum of 40.5hrs of training. There is no maximum training hours although there are maximum training fund$. Of the 40.5hrs, 24hrs are on marksmanship and 8hrs are on "dynamic shooting drills". Page 12, lines 22-27 was offered by amendment (that failed) to be removed. Those lines contain language outlining anonymity of the trained teacher unless otherwise required by law. Also the trained teacher cannot be required to participate in drills unless told of the drill and consents. Curious.
Really curios if they fail a mental assessment if they should be kept as a teacher.

I took a very cursory look at the MMPI-2. It has a few versions that vary slightly. But in general it will be ~ 300-600 true/false questions. It attempts to identify if the test taker is giving true answers or giving answers they perceive to be "correct". So while there isn't so much a pass/fail for the test, it can (supposedly) identify traits. So to your larger point, obviously a trait of psychopath might warranty a greater look-see into that particular school staff member, and clearly -no gun! But it could diagnose something seemingly benign like hypochondria, impatience or introversion. Depending on one's viewpoint, those traits might not seem pertinent to being armed against a school intruder. But are they conducive to being an educator? I have personal opinions about the mmpi and similar tests I've taken for employment. My opinions aren't particularly positive. @KellyinAvon would have a better feel for odds of the bill passing or not. If it does, I'm guessing few schools will use the available funds for training and arming teachers. More likely they allocate the funds for the other allowable items, of which, one is counselors for students after a school shooting/attack.

This has been up a number of times over the years. It has passed the House at least one other time. It got derailed in the Senate (can't exactly remember how) the year both Coach and I testified. I think that was the House bill that got amended into a "crony capitalism" bill.

A versions that have come out of the Senate got stopped because they were pushed by the same crony capitalists that killed the House bill back in the day. I testified against one a few years ago (I really hated being on the opposing side along with the Mad Moms, but at least I opposed it for the right reasons ;) )

When I say "crony capitalism", I mean the bill was so specific the training could only be done why one company. Hell I was looking to see if the training team had to have a retired USAF SMSgt who lives in Hendricks County and has a distinguished grey beard/not exaggerating that much it was ridiculous. I am concerned the same crony capitalist is a sponsor of the bill.

In 2021 or 2022 the same crony capitalism bill got pulled/never had a hearing. I do know the Senator in question had a meeting with the NRA Lobbyist prior to that happening. Just sayin...

Right now? 50/50. If it gets a hearing? 70/30. If it gets a vote in committee? 90/10.

Just like with any other mental health or counseling bs, they'll always find someone that agrees with their cause (sex changes for kids as an example) and pushes it through whether they are mentally fit or not.

My honest opinion on any sort of mental health exam for firearms ownership or carry is, it should never happen. It will be abused by anti gunners to take away our constitutional rights. Like the left abuses everything else to push their Marxist agenda

We do not want .gov in a position to deem who is "worthy" to exercise a constitutional right. No test, no tax of any kind should be permitted, ever, anywhere.

Guess that's what I was getting at. I don't like the testining of any kind for it. And figured they'd use it if they failed as a "see any crazy person can have gun" argument. I think we have a good policy to allowed teachers to carry. We should just amend it to with school board approval and parents can carry as well

    This is my new Senator.
She hasn't responded to any of my emails. Not even a staff member has.

I miss having Chip Perfect. At least he responded to his constituents in a timely manner.

Did you try calling her office number during business hours? Many will have at least a staffer answering the phone. Emails all too often end up in the "bit bucket" as they're overrun with endless SPAM . . . just like I am on my personal email account . . . and SPAM filters are worthless . . . dumping out legit stuff you want and need.

    I don't call I can't hear so it's email or letters.
As a senator her or her staff should be smart enough not to have that problem.
I really dislike the gerrymandering this go around.
Starting to wonder if she's a Rino.

He responded every time for me.
I've sent him and randall frye numerous emails. Haven't gotten one response. When Garten was rep he'd reply, Lucas would only reply if ya sent a email supporting his gun bills. If ya sent a email on taxes 0 response

I also put down in my last email my address and that I am her constituent now just incase she or her staff don't know that.

The write a letter and mail it. It would be much harder to ignore letter mail than email. I get perhaps 10-15 emails per day that I want or need to read. The other 100-150 are SPAM . . . serious unsolicited SPAM . . . and I get a half dozen to a dozen for the same garbage crap from different spammers. Not just adverts from some company I bought something from. It's a royal PITA to sift through it all every day hoping I don't miss anything. It's why I've refused to let any billing be done electronically . . . in spite of being pestered and nagged incessantly to go "paperless". I also found years ago that having paper copy on file if there's a dispute is essential. I've little doubt with their email address being publicly posted they get much more than I do daily.

Maybe you should take out an ad describing her disregard for ADA compliance, or her uncaring for the hearing impaired, or some such thing. You'd probably get her attention. I am half joking. Ads can be expensive and not all attention is good.

HB 1177 (handgun training for teachers, authored by Jim Lucas) hasn't been scheduled for a hearing in the Senate. It passed the House overwhelmingly 71-24 and is now going nowhere. Similar bills have passed the House in the past only to not get a vote in the Senate. In (IIRC) 2019 Coach and I testified in support of a similar bill.

I haven't been beating the drum on this one since I know some of you don't agree with it (I was in high school long before the Gun Free School Zones Act of 1990, I get it.)

If so inclined, give the number below a call. Leave a message for Senator Raatz (Chair of the Education and Career Development Committee) and tell him to give HB 1177 a hearing.
