Exactly. So how would you do it?

It looks as if they "red flagged" this kid from his blades? Because of the mental problems of threatening suicide and to kill others?

Then, not too long after, sell him firearms? How does NICS not see this police report?

    .
They did not red flag this kid. They simply took his stuff and gave it back.

There's a process to the red flag law, they didn't do it.

Same way they didn't red flag the fed ex shooter.

Right. It's why I quoted the phrase.

Did lack of appropriate action by authorities contribute to the dead bodies on the 4th of July? Similar to Ryan Mears responsibility for the FedEx deaths?

Yes. They should also be held accountable. We have these systems in place and don't use them and then people get killed. Then everyone wants to add more systems but we don't ever make any effort to use or enforce what we have. Adding more is just idiotic.

Well, maybe the parameters of mentally competent needs to be defined further. Needs to be objective parameters that everyone can agree on.

And then make sure reporting, adjudicating and treating such people so they pose no danger to themselves and others, is quickly and consistently applied.

He was probably given a Choice to "Voluntarily" give up the Blades at that time - to be recovered when he cooled down

Plus no one that witnessed the "threat" was willing to File a Complaint / Press Charges

Equals Not a Red Flag = No Report to NCIC

No such thing as objective parameters when you're talking about headshrinker nonsense.

Subject verbally threatened in front of officers to kill themselves, had a plan and means.
Subject has history of bed wetting.
Subject has history of violence towards animals, including torture, and killing.
Subject has history of withdrawing from social interactions.
    X
    Y
    Z
Subject receives a “clear and present danger report”

If subject has X or more of these, here is the process of determining if subject should be adjudicated, etc.

All I know is there's going to be trade offs. We do need to better identify and treat these people before they become lone gunmen.

And they didn't report it because he wasn't charged with and convicted of a crime was he? 4473 only deals with convictions and adjudications (for mental illness). Those things didn't happen, so there was nothing to report to NICS.

I wonder how Bobbi answered question 21 e.

Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?

Probably checked the same box as Hunter.

    . . .
About him wearing a dress, it seemed obvious to me it had a purpose. It looked like a planned escape. Dude probably thought he was a ****ing genius. Of course, it actually worked. He was all the way up in Madison before long, but then decided to come back for some reason.
Indeed. He shaved off most of the facial hair and wore a dress to obscure his identity. He is third generation in a city of about 30k, with gramps and pops owning businesses, and pops running for mayor a couple years ago. It's how he escaped through the chaos unrecognized. When they got the rapid DNA back, with a hit on its identity, they knew exactly who he was. The Wanted Poster picture was an older mug shot. Perhaps for his FOID?. Maybe for his D/L? His current post arrest mug shot shows him much more cleanshaven.

His family is a dysfunctional piece of work. The uncle and father were enablers of his psychoses. HIs father went to the PD and got the confiscated knives, dagger and sword for him the day after they were confiscated. His father went with him to buy firearms. This reeks of similar family dynamics as the Buffalo and Uvalde shooters. He should have been put under required observation from each of the two incidents which would have then failed NICS from the suicide and family death threat events.

I also wondered about that. Was he a known drug user?

They took his knives away, and then decided that he was not a threat, so they gave him back his knives. By deeming him not a threat and returning his weapons, there would be no flag in the NICS program. If he was deemed a threat and his knives not returned, then he should not have been able to pass the NICS, but he was deemed ok so no threat, pass background check, get your firearms legally.

There is something broken there, but he managed to work the system perfectly.

Now I'm seeing a report on WTHR saying he planned another shooting in Madison, WI, which is where he drove after leaving the scene in Highland Park. Apparently he confessed to that. He's being held without bail, and if convicted, faces life in prison.

Assault packs are used by the U.S. military forces, including the USMC's FILBE which is coyote, but in the sun & salt water could bleach it out to make it appear a shade of "yellow" to someone not looking that hard.

    (I readily admit to speculating)

Oh, agreed, to the untrained eye, a MOLLE pack in tan or coyote could be translated to some form of yellow. I was just clarifying that the pictured pack is neither yellow nor is it issued to any of our armed forces.

I think it's also similar to Sandy Hook. Similar enabling family dynamics.
