Did you know there can be covenants on ANY property?

A friend bought 10 acres northeast of Lafayette, pure rural land, had 10 pages of covenants the adjoining farmer put on when he sold the land. Things like he couldn't raise pigs, specified the number of chickens, cattle, and horses, that could be on the property, and of course that they couldn't store junk cars and trucks.

Make sure you see what recorded covenants are on any property you buy are...

HOA's suck. I don't need someone else telling me what I can do with what I own.

Big talk from someone that likely does not live on a quarter acre lot. But if you did, are you good with whatever stupidity your neighbor can come up with 10 feet from your house? They decide they want to raise goats in the backyard? Put a 20 foot tall windmill in the front yard? Cover their house in solar panels that mirror the sun on your house heating it up? Build a stockade fence from old pallets in the front yard?

You then are better than me, I don't want any of that BS, and want the protection of covenants to stop it.

I can tell you that our particular HOA is a complete and total JOKE. They damned sure expect that you pay the twice annual HOA fees, and they WILL take you to court if you don`t. But they`re not nearly as tough of residents who violate the covenants. Don`t mow the lawn? Park a semi tractor in the driveway or on the street? Hang blankets in the windows? Park cars on the street that is so narrow that by law, no street parking is allowed? NO PROBLEM. Go ahead, move THREE families into the house. No problem. But you BETTER pay those HOA fees. HOA`s are legal extortion.
Want it fixed? Band together with other residents of like mind and run for the board

Want someone else to fix it? Not gonna happen. If you want a job done right ...

What’s even worse than ****heads who don’t read or abide by their HOA documents is people who move near a race track or an airport them bitch about the noise.
Homeowners in our neighborhood that bought or built homes on the golf course have complained to the HOA about golf balls in their yard. Yes, true story.

It is not limited to the city or burbs, lots of news stories on those moving to the country then in big battles with the farmers, particularly hog farmers over smells. Then more recent they are upset about the chemicals used to farm...

Pro Tip: Don't live upwind from a hog farm...

I lived in a place with an HOA for 15 years. Didn't hate it. It did nothing and the fees paid for trash pickup and streetlights. No problem.

Some Region folks will understand that the place I lived was the "wild west" as far anyone doing anything they wanted with their property, yet, there was an HOA- South Haven. Clearly, there's not a lot that some HOAs prevent. However, the only reason I moved was that I went from a fraction of a acre to acreage and from 1700 sq feet to 4,000+. Didn't care that much about what my neighbors were doing besides living too close to me.

I will not, however, live in a place that has an HOA that has a say about my use of the property or its appearance. I won't. No hate, just my choice. For those who really value their HOA- good news! I won't be your neighbor. The houses are probably too close together anyway.

But sure, there are people our there who viscerally HATE HOAs....with good reason. This is my conclusion my based upon reading a bunch of cases and being involved in a few. There is a doozy going on right now (handled by 2 of my partners) that I, unfortunately, cannot describe due to duties of confidentiality.

I suppose that its a matter of personality, both for the person in the HOA and those running it. May the odds be ever in your favor. For me, I see no reason to be involved with one.

I'd rather live in a rented apartment than own an HOA controlled home in a vinyl village. Heck, the proximity to other people is not that much different nowadays, with your neighbor's house being 10 feet from yours.

I've got a 2/3 acre, most my neighbors are under 1/4. If they felt like doing those things, no problem. Heck I wouldn't mind having a goat or two myself.

I don't want to live in an HOA. Our property is .23 acres. Some of our neighbors are a little trashy and/or annoying. They sometimes do things we don't like, like let their dogs poop in other peoples' yards. My husband is loud and likes to play loud music in the garage. That annoys me, actually...lol. Our dogs bark, but so do other dogs in the neighborhood. I don't give anyone any crap about their stuff, as long as they don't give us crap. We all get along for the most part, and even help each other out. It's pretty much live and let live. We did have one complaining neighbor, strangely enough he was actually the most annoying one of all. Nobody liked him after getting to know him. Much better now that his wife divorced him and he has moved on to terrorize another neighborhood, maybe with an HOA...

    .
I live in the woods, no HOA of any kind other than what nature tries to enforce. That said, my county road has people living on it where the sewage runs right from the trailer to a ravine behind it, and there's a drug dealer living in a camping trailer. I tolerate these things to a degree as I live on top of the ridge and have a long steep driveway so most of what goes on down the county road is the business of those that live there.

I moved from the suburbs which had a HOA that was mainly concerned with use of the lake the homes surrounded. Wasn't much of an issue.
