DoggyMama said her dentist told her about it today. I hadn't heard anything about it so I went and checked. Good news indeed!
I saw it on Twitter. Earlier today Abbot tweeted that he'd have an announcement in 15 minutes. And the twitter mob stormed and stomped their feet and raged, because they knew he was lifting the mask mandate. They pleaded with him not to.

I can't help but think that lifting the Texas mask mandate was a pretty explicit exercise in distraction.

ERCOT woes meant he needed to do something dramatic, so that's how you get dramatic.

Why does the Governor care about ERCOT?
I'm not sure I understand your question.

If I may rephrase a bit, you're asking why the governor of Texas would care about the Energy Reliability Council of Texas after a once-a-century (supposedly) weather event that left millions with rolling blackouts and non-potable water?

    Do I have that right?

Yes, you are implying that it is somehow the Governors fault hence his need for a 'distraction'? ERCOT is a private organization with some govt oversight but it has it's own CEO. I noticed that House democrats launched an 'investigation' into ERCOT, being a Republican state i'm shocked, maybe they'll do Cuomo and covid next. Unless you were implying that the Governor initiated a distraction to cover for the CEO of ERCOT.

Maybe the governor is afraid of backlash (erroneously) directed at him personally. After all, we had a sizeable vocal minority blaming Trump for the bad weather.

As of today, Indiana has the lowest average daily death count since the beginning of the pandemic. The average is currently 8. The last time the moving average was that, it was March 2020. It got to 10 on September 1st, but not 8.

Also, there are only 731 total COVID patients in Indiana hospitals. The last time we had that number it was July 2020. Only 6% of ICU beds are in use for COVID patients.

Well, the structural separation between the governor's office and ERCOT is true, but irrelevant.

People don't care about quasi-governmental entities. They care about water and electricity. The governor has been scrutinized for the lack of actual government role in providing those kinds of utilities.

The entire ERCOT framework was the product of political/governmental decisions. Kinda like the flooding issues related to Katrina that were the product of bad planning for flood mitigation infrastructure.

Politically, the governor had to do something to distract from the recent dramatic failures of Texas government. That's the political reality. (Well, some of the failures were the product of failures over time that only recently became dramatic.)

US POTUS has nominal (if even that) influence on the economy, but bears the brunt of it in bad elections.

The power doesn't have to go out just because it gets cold out.
The trick is to keep the hamsters warm.
Yeah, and sorry for contributing to this particular de-railing - is there a separate ERCOT thread? It really is a fascinating, multi-layered trainwreck. That will be a case study for many parts of politics and government.

Point is that, regardless whether the mask mandate currently (or ever) made sense for Texas, it was an easy way to get at least some positive momentum for the governor's office.

It is more likely he is implying that the evil, heartless Republican governor of Texas threw the health and wellbeing of his constituents under the bus in order to distract from his own supposed shortcomings

I'm sure Trump and DeSantis would recognize that script
