Ammo Prices...Seem to be coming down

Ammo is here in Lafayette but sky high. This is a good sign. It is on the shelf and will only come down.

Gage availability and prices. Good thing..alot of things comming back. Bad news prices still high. I assume in stock means demand dropped. Hopefully prices will follow

This is going to take a while. The first sign of progress is availability followed by extended availability. After that, prices will begin to fall as demand eases.

My wife and I did a drive around today hitting over half a dozen stores north and west of Indianapolis, as far west as crawfordsville and greencastle. I came home with one box of federal 9 mm range fodder. The one store that had ammunition for less than $42 per 50 round box would only permit a one box purchase.

My available rounds for action pistol are rapidly dwindling. Looks like it'll be dry fire and maybe a 22 for the matches in just a few short weeks.

Price coming down? I'm waiting for it to appear again. 2 of the last 3 LGS I've been in over the last 6 weeks didn't even have any ammo to shoot on their ranges

Without getting too deep into details the short answer, from my perspective, is no ammo prices will not be coming down anytime soon. I believe they will keep going up. Below I'll provide a few bullet points as to why I have come to this conclusion.

Let's start with why we're where we're at right now vs the beginning of 2019...

Massive increase in new gun ownership fueled by multiple reasons...uncertain political climate, rising violence, civil unrest, etc

COVID-19 SHUTDOWNS...Product halts, production bottlenecks due to supply chain halts, etc

Increased demand for raw materials...the metals used to make the ammunition is in higher demand now as well.

Increased demand = increased price, but that's not all. There is another part to this that I believe is being left out. Inflation. It's going to happen. It is happening. Without going to deep it's easy for me to see that the haves are not affected by this "pandemic" at all and in fact are doing quite well if not better than the have nots.

Basically those with plenty of money have no problem paying higher prices for things they want, this includes ammo. Meanwhile, there is another subset of the population that isn't doing very well. They cannot afford basic things yet alone extremely high priced ammo so they will either sacrifice and pay more or do without. This gets back to the increasing wealth gap in this country and the pace at which it's happening. It can be seen in other markets such as the stock market or cyptocurrency market as well.

I have been watching ammo prices very closely. The manufacturers are all raising prices to the distributors. From what I've seen this is going to be the new normal for the foreseeable future or prices will continue to go up, especially if there is any sort of gun legislation / ammo legislation that passes the house and senate. If online ammo sales are banned the sky is the limit for ammo prices.

Right now the new "cheap" or standard prices I'm seeing for the most popular calibers are as follows...

9mm. 50 cents per round brass-cased is considered a good deal.

45 acp 60 cents per round brass-cased

5.56/223 70 cents per round

I'm seeing steel cased 9mm retail at a low price of 40 cents per round. I think it's only a matter of time before the contract prices are up for Cabelas/Bass Pro, Academy, & Rural King and their prices go up as well.

I think we're going to start seeing prices rise in other sectors too. If you look at market trends you will see signs that the US dollar is weakening.

My son just picked up 2 300 round boxes of .223 Aguila at Rual king Sunday for 149.99 ea. Not great not bad. .50 a round... But it was there. He said they had about 20 of them.

Local RK yesterday only had 300 win mag... NOTHING else...no 12, no 22.
I predict we are not going to see prices go lower for a very long time. If ever.

Is it just me or does it seem like ammo prices are coming down the last couple of days? We can only hoard so much before the supply and demand catch up huh? And ammo companies will just keep pumping it out. I do wish they would pump out more 45, it is still kind of salty!

Not that I've seen so far. I believe they are topping out and people are starting to buy less. The buying volume is still really high. I'm sure when the Democrat Socialist party puts a limit to 1 box of ammo per month on everyone the ammo shortage will end and the ammo blackmarket begins.

Well put, ajeandy. Did score 1 box of Winchester 17 HMR for a screwed up bargain of $5 a box at Wally's world yesterday.... It was LIMIT 1 on any ammo. They only had 2 boxes of 20 gauge. A few boxes of 350 Legend....and 8 or 10 boxes of 28 gauge!!!!! (I guess the guy that lives near Ft. Wayne or Columbia City hasn't made it to Goshen, yet).

The thing is...there may actually be some validity to that right now. Democrats are trying to ban M855 ammo as of Feb 20th. We already know they want to ban online ammo sales an "Assault Weapons"
