I just take my cat with me when I go for a walk. The local dogs don't seem to bother for 'some' reason.
I want the cat.....really.

Have known a couple guys over the years that owned big cats, usually tigers. Tigers is BIG animals. They look big at the zoo, but they look enormous when you're sitting next to one! Uh, 'cause they ARE.I want the cat.....really.
I was attacked by a pack of wild dogs while jogging in Morocco, and fought them off with a knife, and I can guarantee you if I had been armed with a gun, I would have gone to town.
I've been chased by dogs in the US while running and biking, and even been bitten once, but I've never fired. Lots of dogs will "act tough" but aren't really planning to bite you. I would really hate to shoot someone's pet unless there was no other option.

Open carry. Any aggressive dog will walk away, tail between legs.
What about putting down my old, sick cat?I can't find the law, specifically, but I think I remember that "killing a domestic animal" is a felony. Sen. Jim Arnold shepherded that one through a few years ago. Not sure if it had a self-defense clause in it.
ETA: Found it, and it does. SEA 222 from 2009 session. (IC 35-46-3-12(d))
Blessings

...My wife, who used to be a mail carrier, says "carry a repellant spray, always look for escape routes, like climbing up on a car." She said that she has been charged several times, and bear spray stopped every dog she sprayed.
I hear that firing a warning shot is the way to go
We are not talking about attack trained guard dogs here, we are talking about beloved pets. Just like walking through an airport with your favorite rifle might be legal but unnecessary, shooting an ornery dog could be legal but nearly always is unnecessary.
Even in my currently crippled state, I ain't afraid of no dog. 99 times out of 100 they're just bluffing. Of the remaining 1%, 99 out of 100 are relatively easily beaten. A pre-teen child out weighs and can be far more dangerous than most dogs, how would it look to shoot one? You wouldn't be afraid to slap the living crap out of a teen, why not the pooch too?
Authority goes a long way with normal domestic dogs. Tell them NO! and G*d d*mn mean it........ 'Works 99 times out of 100. Failing that, have other options, don't be gun-centric (I made up a word). Your most deadly weapon shouldn't be the first and only available strategy. I can terrify every mutt in my neighborhood with a whiffle bat. I wouldn't kill any of them but I don't mind adjusting attitudes every now and then.
If you fall, if you are small or weak, or if you have debilitating fear of dogs then you might be able to rationalize how it's OK to sling lead up and down residential streets. Or that it was the only option that you killed some kid's soul-mate and created the new generation of rabid anti gun activists. For the average man though you would have a difficult time explaining bullet holes in my car because you were put in fear of your life by a 75 pound little street punk on four legs.
I understand that you shouldn't have to put up with this....... And you don't always know when to carry a whiffle bat. But for me I think that the fear for my life standard should prevail, at least when we are talking about neighborhood dogs. I know I am old but when I was coming up there was a common expression, "Every dog deserves at least one bite"..........
Four or five of them could try my patience though.
I really wish folks would train their dogs.
Don't really know, or care, what the law states. I really don't want to get bit.
Can I get an "amen"? Been washing cat urine off of our porch WAY too much lately.^^^^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Contain/control your animals. This goes for Cats as well
