I bought an AK back when they were under half the cost of a comparable AR. Ammo was cheaper, mags were cheaper, and its tough to argue with 7.62. After that, I just never saw the need to add an AR to my stable. I do like the ergonomics of the AR, but if I ever pick one up its more likely to be an AR-10 than an AR-15. Plus right now I have an issued one I can play with if I ever get the urge.

    I had an SKS once.
It was a Friday moring ~0730 I was on my way home from work(also going to the 1500 later that day.). I was also on the phone with this pretty nurse I met that night at work. Not paying attention my foot fell closer to the floor. State police stoped me for going 68mph on 65 south where the speed limit is 55. Money was tight at the time, so I sold my SKS to pay for my mistake.
Needless to say I don't speek to the nurse, and I'm out an SKS. As far as an AR I am currently buying parts to build mine.

I carried one for 7 years. But fell in love with battle rifles.
I've got a 308 for long shots, 12ga. for close in, 1911 for carry and a Camp 45 for fun. Th..th..th..th..that's not all folks.

Ohh boy. Do you really want the answer? I am an M14/M1 Carbine owner. So I could aford 3 or 4 M16/AR types (will just call it the M16 from here on out)

Because the M16 is a freaking Mattel toy!!!!!!!!!

Direct Impingement. Don't get me started on this. On every shot the rifle is barfing all over it's insides. Who wants this? On the M14 all the dirty stuff is kept in a easily cleanable stainless steel cylinder up front. Not in the internals of your rifle! The M1 Carbine is even better about this with it's short stroke system.

The original caliber 5.56x45 is a damn varmint round. I won't get the caliber argument going again, but I have little faith in this round. I like 30 carbine better then I do like 5.56. Yes I know there are 300s and 6.5/6.8s that fit the AR15 platform, but by the time you pay for them, you might as well moved up to 7.62x51

The M4 has another issue, the barrel is too damn short, even in civilian length at 16 or in mill form at 14.5. You loose too much. CQB, clearing buildings you say? RoE bull honk. Want to know how WWII guys cleared a building? They fired 30 cal THRU the building to "clear it".

After having the M14 and the M1 carbine, I just can't warm up to the M16.

Call me an old school crusty curmudgeon and your right. But I will stay with 30 cal wood and steel rifles. Large bore rifles are what made this country what it is today.
I own rifles that were made to KILL communist heathens. Not wound them.

I will have to call you a young old school curmudgeon. I do agree with you on most of your preferences except I would take the M1 Garand 30-06 over the puny underpowered 30 carbine.

I was gonna stay out of this discussion; but, now I go with ^^^^ what he said. :+1:

    Well said, Crusty!

As CSM Plumley said "I'll just keep my pistol (1911)Sir, time comes I need one of those plastic rifles there'll be plenty of them laying on the ground."

Don't get me wrong, The Garand is an awesome rifle. Heck the M14 and the M1 share about 20% of the parts. I might get one in 7.62x51 some day.

The M14 is my go to main RIFLE. But the M1 carbine is what it is, a carbine. a TRUE carbine. It's not for front line use. it's for Cooks,Truck Drivers, and officers. But it is effective. It is no M1 or M14, but it will serve as a backup/wife rifle just fine. It was to be used where you would be using a pistol and be more effective then a pistol.

    I have a 1911 as well.

I was never too interested in them, but I bought an AR pistol last week just to play with it and see if I liked it. It's ok, I guess, but I much prefer my Mini-14. The pistol is INSANELY loud and belches gas in every direction, like Big Moose said. Honestly, if someone broke into the house I'd grab my Camp 9.

Don't own one, never will. The AR has got to be the most over hyped gun in history. Give me a good quality bolt gun over the plastic toy crap any day. Overpriced (by far) for what they are. an old AK or SKS will outlive and outperform in the dirt and grime any day of the week.

AR's make decent varmint rifles, .223 puts the hammer on yotes and chucks.
Even a reg model, with trigger job, makes a dandy iron sighted rig for close range work, or if scoped (on a flat top) a sweet little rig for yotes, esp when they are on the move.

Not a fan of .223, or AR really...........but there is a .223 I'd like to have, an FNC para.

I met a guy last night at dinner who doesn't have one. Met up with a friend after work for a burger, a beer, and a lengthy discussion of all the enticing stuff on display at the SHOT show this year. We spoke mostly in that gun code our fellow diners couldn't make sense of but Kyle finally said something about a .450 Bushmaster and a woman three tables over called out "Do you have one of those?!?!" This sets off a series of rather comical and uncomfortable (for lots of our fellow diners) discussions about rifling twists, PMAGs,ballistic performance, and so on. Seems this couple sold their bushmaster M4 (with scope, Harris swivel bipod, and a bunch of other upgrades) the day before yesterday to a local gun shop. Along with 1200 rounds of loaded M855. 1000 FMJ bullets. 1000 primers. Pounds of powder. Several hundred pieces of brass. Some other stuff I can't recall, as the list just kept going. The man said they lost some money on it, since they bought it all during the peak of hysteria last year, but he was happy with the gun shop's generous offer of $750. He was so impressed with their generosity, he also let them have his Sig .357/40 combo for $300. Anyway, I guess the black rifle isn't everyone's cup o' tea, right? I, however, seem to spend more on AR parts than I do on groceries.

I have owned several AR's, but have always sold them for a huge profit during a panic. Sadly, I've lost track now how many times we have been through that same cycle over the past 20 years. I am currently in the process of building another one , retro style, using one of the M-16 parts kits. My main interest in doing so is because I grew up during the Vietnam war.

I have never had a problem selling them during a panic because I have a Galil that I like much, much better. I won't try to give you reasons why the Galil is the best rifle of all time because it is simply a personal preference. I just really like it. I have never had a functional issue with it of any kind and for some reason I shoot it more accurately than I have ever shot any of the AR's that I have owned, and I have owned some nice ones. There is no reason at all to believe a Galil is more accurate than an AR, yet for me it is.

I would guess that sums up the reason that everybody has for not owning an AR. They have something else that they like better, and the reasons why don't have to be logical or even true for anybody else. It just has to be real for them.

I don't have any long guns. I have this little shoulder issue that makes even a .22 rifle very painful to shoot. So I just have a few handguns. Maybe surgery later this year, maybe not.

I've never felt the need for an AR. The round is puny, the rifles themselves seem like they require a lot of maintenance and care. Plus I don't really have anywhere to practice with it.

All that said, I don't currently have a MBR and do see a need for one. I did pick up my first stripped lower on black Friday just for a project someday and to see what all the fuss is about. I can tell you my first AR will be very bare bones. None of that $2k tacti-cool crap.

Had one and loved it. I like my FAL more, which is what I traded the upper for. The impingement system is not nearly the problem its made out to be. The thing I liked most was the handling and sighting system. If you get one that has regular A2 sights, they are about the best military sights out there. I see a lot of talk on here about the .556 caliber. The round relies heavily on its potential velocity to get its job done, so a 20" barrel is what I prefer in a .556. If I go shorter, Id go with a 9mm.

the only reason i dont have one is ak ammo is cheaper, but im considering a psa with a 20 inch barrel my little sister loves to hunt coyotes with me but she cant hold that ak steady standing its too heavy for her so a ultra light ar 15 is what she wants for Christmas so i might have to get two of them together. i will say 556 is crazy effective on coyotes more than 30-30 or 7.62 x 39 soft points of course. wait then i can get a 450 bushmaster too, i think the ar bug just bit me....
