Which is more common in Indiana -- 270 or 30-06?

I thinking about getting a deer rifle. Which is more common in Indiana -- 270 or 30-06?

First check the DNR regulations and determine what type of land you will be hunting on to make sure you will be legal beagle.

I hunt private land and once used the 30-06 03A3 that my dad got thru DCM after WW2. Purely sentimental, Dad got a sporter stock from Herters or Bishop with some really nice wood.

you’ll find both on most shelves that sell ammo. however its not often I see .270 rifles for sale, but pretty easy to find a 30-06

I'm going to say it probably breaks down to age groups from my experience.

Over 55 - 30-06
35-55 - .270
under 35 - 6.5 Creedmoore

The 30-06 and .270 are both great calibers. Both will kill deer no problem, and ammo for both is easy to find.

I have at least 5 in 30-06 and 0 in 270. But I am old… and most of them are milsurp.
I do have several in 308…

30-06 is the more common of the two. But there are way more 243. And beyond that, there are way way more .308. It all just kinda depends on the land you are hunting. .308 will kill anything on this cotenant. I've taken a lot of deer with a 357 magnum rifle.

The Amish around here like the 270 though. Some English guy told them years ago that was the "one" to get. So now they ALL get 270s.

No problem, you can buy a clip on man bun for shooting 6.5, then take it off when done!

I have never fired a 270, which is weird now that I think about it, given the number of rifles i have and have had. I would think 30/06 is more common.

I don't know the answer to your question. But I choose 30-06. More bullet weight choices.

I think 30-06 is more common, however .270 is not rare. If you handload, 30-06 will give you more options. If not, .270 will shoot flatter. Both are good choices.

What do you already have? Do you have a stashe of .30-06 already? If so - then get one of those.

If not...then why beat yourself up unnecessarily with a .30-06 when a more modern cartridge will literally do the same exact things, balistically speaking, with less recoil?

Do you already have .270 Win ammo stockpiled? If so - then get one of those.

If not - then there are more modern cartridges that will literally do the same exact things, ballistically speaking, but in a shorter (lighter) action?

That said, the both of the above are tried and true cartridges. Both of them will take almost every single game species on this continent - though the .270 may be a tad light for moose and brown bear.

For my $, though, If I were starting out from scratch, I'd pick 6.5CM over both of the above due to shorter action, ballistic efficiency of the cartridge/bullet, and less-stout recoil of the .06 and .308.
