If I can't get a few yeh's on suggested replacement calibers I'm going to post what I have so far from other suggestions.

What caliber listed would be less popular than the 38 super?

Hard to be certain, but I would guess .30 super carry due to its age, .327 for the same reason and that it’s a revolver cartridge, and 41 mag even though it’s pretty old was just never popular from what I know.

Everyone has their pet cartridge. Funny enough I don’t own nor have I ever shot a .38 super. For some reason it just popped into my head. lol.

Now 7.62x25? THAT’S a cartridge!

The most common or best selling ammo is more of a result of marketing and passive masses enjoying the cheaper rounds, availability and an easier learning curve. Doesn’t make them bad, just understandable.

For instance,

I feel the American designed .38 Super is a superior round over the German 9mm in many ways. However, we see how that turned out. The fail was not the fault of the .38 Super but for the reasons above. NATO and investors paved this road for the 9mm and the followers ate it up.

Just look at what happened to the .356 TSW. Like the .40S&W, marketing geniuses tried to make their boat payments on rounds that we didn’t need.

The list of these fancy pancy better mousetraps is long. Truth be told, packaging, advertising, promotions, all wasted our resources for ammo and components, especially in a pandemic when we all could have got by with just more of the already proven calibers.

I'm boring. I'm down to .380acp and .45acp.

I fitted the 1911s so as to have less muzzle flip than the Taurus PT92 I used to carry. More power with less perceived recoil rendered most 9mm platforms irrelevant for me.

As @BehindBlueI's has stated when it comes to handgun calibers shot placement matters. Not so much the diameter but shot placement.
That said I wouldn't want to go through being shot 15x with any firearm.

I found that the 44mag being about as popular as the 40S&W to be surprising also.
