    But the circuit is complete, so isn't all the bare metal already live?
    The circuit has to be through the body.
    If it's a fly, the current will go through the wire from hot, to the common.
    There is no path through the fly.
    Just like the bird on the power line.

    Course, if the bird puts one foot on a ground, and one on the wire, then there is a path through it's body.

    If I grab a hot, the path can go from my arm, through my heart, down my torso, through my leg, into ground.
    Of, if I touch a grounded panel with one hand, and a hot with the other, the path goes from arm to arm, passing though my heart.

    Aha, got it. I actually knew that (don't grab both wires at once, etc) but the idea of using it as a bug zapper was so intriguing that I forgot that basic laws of electricity apply. :rolleyes:

    My Dad, born in 1903 was an electrician. He installed knob and tube (the safest wiring possible).

    The wire was all black. He would grab the hot leg and say, "Yep, that is the hot."
