I've got an older Bushmaster XM-15 and I hate the removable carrying handle sights and the A2 front sight. Do you think it is stupid to cut down the A2 sight gas block and make the XM-15 a flattop? My eyes are getting bad and I would like to have a low profile red dot on the gun. The A2 sight is totally in the way. I know a scope would be OK because I've got an AR like this but this one I don't want a scope on it. I know after market gas blocks are availability but for some reason I see a headache doing one of these.

Remove the carry handle and put the red dot on the rail. With the correct height riser, the dot will co-witness with the front sight. Try it out and see how it looks. If you still don't like it, then just replace the gas block. It is easy to do.

If you need some help, let me know? I am 1.5 hours North of you. If you come to my place, I have a spare gas block we can install.

I ran a 30mm RDS w the dot sitting right on top of the front sight when zeroed.
Could lift my head slightly causing the dot to float above the front sight post.
"Opened" my view and still hit dead on.
Thought it worked well, and easy to do.
It didn't bother me to stay down and have the dot on top of the front sight.
Both methods were fine with me.

I've got a Aimpoint PRO mounted to a rifle with a fixed A2-style FSB. It's set up for absolute co-witness, and I don't even notice the front sight when I'm using the dot. It's not been a problem.

I bubbaed one off with a cutoff wheel and some cold blue and it came out okay. The main problem with add on gas blocks is the scallops for the pins interfere/alter where the set screws land sometimes. Clamp on gas blocks can work in this situation.

Little pricey at $186. I put one on a 20" AR. Got it from an INGO member many years ago, for way less.

    This one is $162.
