My son is setting up a reloading bench and needs a powder scale.

    Beam scale?
    Magnetically dampened?
    Electronic scale?

What do you recommend? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each?

    Thanks for all replies,
    Doug

What is his primary loading going to consist of, i.e. rifle, pistol, shotgun? Is he into competitive shooting, if so what type?

He will be reloading pistol ammunition, .45, 9mm, and .38. He is shoting IPSC type competition and steel plates.
He may reload rifle later, but pistol only for now.

Whatever scale he gets, I would strongly recommend a set of check weights. I have the Lyman check weights.

I really like the electronic scales. I find them easy to read, fast to use and accurate. They are very good when you have to weigh a lot of something, like bullets. You do have to let them warm-up for a period, like 30 minutes and keep them covered from dust and make sure that they are kept out of any air currents. I had a Dillon D-Terminator and couldn't have been happier.

I recently bought a Lyman 1200 DPS III. It is the ticket for measuring each charge, like for precision rifle shooting. I set it up and place an empty pan on the platform and it trickles the charge that I have selected. Each time I replace the empty pan, it automatically fills it with the same charge.

Balance beams are fine, but the one I had was off at the lighter weights. I sent it back and then it was off for heavier weights. A good balance beam is fine, but if he wants to get one, have him get a good one with magnetic dampener and easy to read graduations. This seems to be a very good model: Powder Scales - RCBS 10-10 Scale
