Police find 5,000 marijuana plants in dunes park
Log in: HeraldTimesOnline.comPORTAGE — Police found about 5,000 marijuana plants growing wild on property owned by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in Portage.
Officers from several northwest Indiana police agencies spent Thursday in the thick brush, pulling up the plants and carting them away to be burned.
Portage Police Assistant Chief Larry Jolley says they found many more plants than they expected.
Chief Park Ranger Mike Bremer says it’s not known how the plants ended up on the property, but they may have been growing wild for several years. He says the while the plants would produce a low-quality drug, it is still illegal to harvest them.
One officer disturbed a bee hive and was stung about 30 times. Police say the officer was treated and is doing well.
So they wasted all that manpower to cart it all away and burn it, which is what would have happened anyway
