So, I was in a large sporting goods store in Crawfordsville yesterday to pick up a firearm that I had ordered. The gentleman said I would have to leave the store with it in a locked case. I asked why, he pointed to a sign on the wall that stated that this point was within 1000 feet of a school and all firearms entering or leaving must be in a locked case. I may or may not have had my IWB piece on me. I asked him if he needed me for the next few minutes and he said no, I was waiting on the background check. I walked out of the store and may have divested myself of some incriminating equipment. When I walked into the store the first time I looked for a no guns sign and didn't see anything and being a sporting goods store that sells firearms I didn't think it would be an issue. The second time I entered the store I saw the sign to the far left of the doors. The moral of this story is look two or three times for signs just to cover your six.

Well. First. I'm glad whatever would-be school shooter who buys a gun from that store has to lock it up in a case before he unlocks it, loads it, and goes on his rampage.

I don't even look for signs in Indiana. Even if I see one, I am already to the door probably. I will either continue on mission or leave, depending on how bad I want something in that store. I will not go back to the truck, pull off my EDC and then go back in. Any thief that's watching that is worth a crap is gonna know what I did and probably think "free gun".
I typically know what I want when I go in and what stores have said item. I very rarely go to a store just to browse anymore.

IANAL, but I'm 99% sure that's not how the Federal GFSZA works. Also, look for signs? Screw that.

You don't want to be observed hiding valuables in your vehicle.

When I know I am going to be somewhere that I have to leave my gun (or other valuables) in the truck I stop a couple blocks away, put it in the console safe, then drive to my destination, so no one sees me disarming. Wife (is supposed to) do the same thing when she puts her purse in the trunk for an event.

I assume you bought the gun at Dunham's?

Google maps shows that there is an elementary school across the street (Hoover Elementary). Does Indiana law prohibit firearms from being within 1000 feet?

It doesn't even look like the school in is within that 1000 foot range just looking at the satellite photo, but it is probably close.

It seems more likely that is one of those one size fits all policies that corporate hands down across all stores in all states.

As I understand it (again, IANAL), the 1,000 ft exclusion zone doesn't apply to those who are licensed by the state to carry a firearm. So, it really doesn't matter.

(Now, how that FGFSZA exception applies in a constitutional carry state, I'm uncertain. Perhaps another valid reason to get/retain an LTCH in Indiana.)

I have my LTCH. I started getting it back in December and I just decided to keep going with it even thought we passed constitutional carry.

I remember when my wife worked at RK they had the same policy. They used to have cheap cases they sold for people who didn't have one. Can't remember what location it was. I told her F that, I won't give that idiot store a penny of my money for having such a stupid policy. They're also the store that said that couldn't answer any questions about the 4473 because that was against the law...
