Obama extends olive branch in gun control debate - The Washington Post

This does not sound like an "olive branch" to me. Although I think sitting down to talk is usually a good thing, I have to agree with LaPierre on this one.

I did get a kick out of this quote though:

This month, when a Mexican reporter asked him at a news conference about whether U.S. gun laws contribute to the flow of weapons into Mexico’s drug wars, the president responded: “I believe in the Second Amendment. It does provide for Americans the right to bear arms for their protection, for their safety, for hunting, for a wide range of uses.”

President Obama continued, "So that's what the Second Amendment Provides for. It is actually the BATFE who has been charged with contributing to the flow of weapons into Mexico's drug wars. Get your facts right."

I would rather the NRA sit down with the President. my two cents, but not sitting down does less than at least meeting with him and see whats going on!

If I believed that they really wanted a productive discussion, I would be asking La Pierre to do it... insisting even. I believe this may just be positioning for future anti-gun, anti-NRA rhetoric though.

Obama is a politician. He says what he thinks will get him through the current press conference and maybe to the next election and no further. Ignore what he says. Watch what he does. By their fruits, you will know them.

This is an attempt to get the NRA to concede something so he can go to his base and say he got SOMETHING done with gun control. He knows he's going to get hit hard from the left in the primaries about guns, Gauntanamo, and all the other stuff he lied about during the last set of primaries.

Yeah but not being there just means the nra isn't there to speak on behalf of gun owners, which is why I have felt the nra is worthless to be a part of.

Although I have not renewed my NRA dues in decades, I don't think they are worthless....not completely. I just don't think they need to do more and talk less.

If they stopped filling my mailbox with junkmail for the last 25 years they could have saved a pretty penny...that could be used to protect the rights of American citizens.

I like the GOA group a little better, but I don't belong to them either. I guess I'm not much of a joiner.

Any olive branch from Pres. Obama to gun owners is likely to have thorns on it. Watch him carefully. What really concerns me is the next supreme court justice appointment. I'm hoping someone else live at 1600 Penn Ave. by then.

Well it looks like Obama wants to negotiate with the NRA. Just for the sake of discussion. What would you give Obama in an exchange for a repeal of the Hughes Amendment?

I agree with most of the things in this thread but I just don't see what it would hurt to be in the meeting instead of letting them meet without anyone to put in a gun owners stance...

Interesting theory there. We could only hope but I have my doubts. The left would crucify him and I think he knows it. But you never know about desperate politicians. Make no mistake about it he is desperate over 2012 IMO.

Democrats in general and PRes Obama are incrementalist. They are willing to settle for the smallest concession knowing they will come back for more when possible. The NRA has been more aware of this than almost any other organization and has steadfastly fought agianst any "gun control" legislation not so much because it is bad in and of itself but because it is a bad precident.

if you give them anything you will never get it back and they will come back to your door wanting more.

    Heres to the NRA

I do not trust the bammer any farther than I can throw him and that is not very far. He bends with the wind and is a politician through and through. He will say what he needs to say or do what he needs to do to gain political points. Just never forget that he is a socialist/communist and has Hilary signing on to a gun control treaty proposed by the U.N. His interests and visions for this country are not the same as most of us native born citizens!.

I, for one, am thrilled about "gun owners" or the NRA getting a sit-down with Obama concerning common sense gun control.

We can finally repeal GCA and the take the F out of the BATFEGS (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Explosives, and Gun Smuggling)

We'll all own machine guns by the weeks end! That's what the sit-down is about, right?

Remember, in Braveheart, when Longshanks invites the clans for a meeting, and Mel Gibson arrives late to find they've all been hanged? I consider a invitation from the Kenyan to the NRA to be something like that.

I would allow obama-messiah to be able to continue in office without proving his birthplace as I had to do to retire from my company in exchange for him repealing the unconstitutional Lyndon Johnson 1968 Gun Control Act in it's entirety.
