If they did realize it, but didn't care or didn't think that it would have been this big of a deal, then I think they really need to take a better look at the current political demographics in this country and reeveluate some of their decisions.
I think they've been drinking their own kool-aid and actually believe their victory was the landslide that the media claimed.
    Actual votes:
    McCain- 59,934,814 45.7%
    Obama- 69,456,897 52.9%

Not quite the landslide they claim.

There's a difference between non-mainstream media and crackpots churning out conspiracies from their basement.

And seven percent of the popular vote, considering in the past three elections the percentage of difference has been less than one percent, yeah, that's a pretty big win.

It WOULD be a big win if the percentage was in the double digits. It is not.

And the fact that 2/3rds of this Country did not vote is VERY telling. In most Countries, only 1/3rd of the Country voting would be considered illegitimate. Unless 2/3rds of their Country were not of voting age I guess... :dunno:

Regardless. It says a lot with the majority of voting adults do not do so.

I could probably overlook the bowing; it's the dropping to his knees that I have the most problem with

Taken in isolation I would probably consider the bow a mistake in understanding of Japanese custom. As part of a larger pattern, however, of snubbing our friends and sucking up to "opponents/enemies" (in this case over Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be my guess), it's much more worrying.

    He blew it, again. ........l.

Dude, he wasn't on his knees. Hahaha. LOL at myself!!! I am hilarious!!! :rockwoot:

Isn't it customary in Japan to bow when meeting someone? It's a respect thing or something? Isn't it their way of shaking hands?

If that is the case, then it doesn't bother me. But, as a Catholic, I expect him to kiss the Papal Ring when the Pope visits, out of respect.

In all seriousness, I am not sure how I feel about this. Is it a gesture, a sign of weakness, I don't know. I don't think it is of any major political or foreign policy significance.

US protocol, for better than 200 years has been that Americans bow to no-one. From George Washington onward. Nixon gave a truncated bow to the Emperor when he was in office and caught h*ll for it. Obama's bow was much worse and a symbol of weakness and subservience. As Jake Tapper reported at ABC papers in Japan wouldn't even run the picture becuase it was so embarrassing.
As for the Popes ring. Nope. Not even if the president were catholic. Most people recognise the pope as a religious leader and forget that he is also a head of state, ruling the Vatican, a sovereign state.
Is it major? Not horribly, but is is an embarrassing faux pas and reflects poorly on us, since he represents us. I've seen diplomats and world leaders meet us, (even met a couple myself) and never have I seen an American bow. It's against long standing protocol. It just isn't done.

Not a horrible faux paus considering Japan's customs and traditions but I agree, US President should not bow to anyone, customary or not. When will he get it right?

    He's just a stupid DB.

A towel boy who thinks he's being a team player. Never accomplished a single thing you can hold in your hand and say "Look what I did, look what I made". He has no positive value to society. Pretty much like any other politician, lawyer, leeche living off the labor of the working class.

<translated from the Japanese>A prime Minister that has any character at all would not shake hands with anyone, I don't care if he is on their soil or not. If the barbarians cannot do a proper polite bow, well, why should we follow their customs?</translated from the Japanese>

Works for you? Since shaking hands is not their custom, you wouldn't take offense at anyone from Japan refusing to shake hands when visiting the US would you?

Works for me. America was once known as the GREATEST power on the planet in every aspect. Not equal, not lesser, the GREATEST. Acting equal or lesser is certainly not going to bring us back to that point, but create further contempt for us and our way of life. If they don't wanna shake hands over here then fine, we reinstate trade sanctions, tariffs on their imports, and even blast 'em if need be. If they want to do the same in return for us not bowing, fine, we can always blast 'em if need be. I know, I know, not "PC", not "nice", not "fair". Guess what, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. That was the attitude of nearly EVERY American when we were at the height of our greatness and to speak out differently got you labeled a "commie", "pinko", or "sympathizer" and likely meant worse things yet. WE MUST RETURN TO THIS WAY OF THINKING to some degree or we will continue to flounder around at the bottom of the pool. When my Grandfather fought in and won WWII, it was because we were the greatest and NO ONE was going to push us around. When my father fought in Viet Nam and we came home with our tails between our legs (due to politics, not our soldiers) it was because the hippy liberal crowd here at home had lost their way and did not demonstrate greatness. It is this same hippy liberal crowd that is running the show now. Pray for my generation because most have either lost their way or were never shown the way to greatness.

I received this in my email today and thought this was a good place to share it.
While I've little interest in getting in the middle of the Obama birth issue,
Paul Hollrah over at UTFSM did so yesterday and believes the issue can
be resolved by Obama answering one simple question:

What passport did he use when he was shuttling between New York ,
    Jakarta, and Karachi?

So how did a young man who arrived in New York in early June 1981,
without the price of a hotel room in his pocket, suddenly come up with
the price of a round-the-world trip just a month later?

And once he was on a plane, shuttling between New York , Jakarta ,
and Karachi , what passport was he offering when he passed through
    Customs and Immigration?

The American people not only deserve to have answers to these questions,
they must have answers. It makes the debate over Obama's citizenship a
    rather short and simple one.

Q: Did he travel to Pakistan in 1981, at age 20?
A :Yes, by his own admission.

Q: What passport did he travel under?
A: There are only three possibilities…
    1) He traveled with a U.S. Passport,
    2) He traveled with a British passport, or
    3) He traveled with an Indonesian passport.

Q: Is it possible that Obama traveled with a U.S. Passport in 1981?
A: No. It is not possible. Pakistan was on the U.S. State Department's
    "no travel" list in 1981.

    Conclusion:
When Obama went to Pakistan in 1981 he was traveling either with a
British passport or an Indonesian passport.

If he were traveling with a British passport that would provide proof
he was born in Kenya on August 4, 1961, not in Hawaii as he claims.
And if he were traveling with an Indonesian passport that would tend
to prove he relinquished whatever previous citizenship he held, British
or American, prior to being adopted by his Indonesian step-father in 1967.

Whatever the truth of the matter, the American people need to know
how he managed to become a "natural born" American citizen between
    1981 and 2008..

Given the destructive nature of his plans for America, as illustrated by
his speech before Congress and the disastrous spending plan he has
presented to Congress, the sooner we learn the truth of all this, the better.

If you Don't care if Your President is not a natural born Citizen and in
Violation of the Constitution, then Delete this and go into your cocoon.

You really wouldn't take the least bit of offense at a foreign leader from Asia (where shaking hands on meeting is not, and never has been, the custom) refusing to shake hands with an American president? I used Reagan as an example to head off the "he deserves it" that many would say about Obama.

You do realize don't you that "greatness" does not have to mean "arrogance"?

One does not have to be rude and the stereotypical "ugly American" to show greatness. "Walk softly but carry a big stick" is not just about speaking volume and pieces of wood but about courtesy on the one hand and ability to defend oneself if courtesy and kindness are not reciprocated on the other.

Courtesy. Good manners. Not subservience. The problem is that what constitutes courtesy varies endlessly from culture to culture. Only extreme provincialism prevents people from recognizing that.

George Bernard Shaw's "Caesar and Cleopatra" said:
THEODOTUS: Caesar: you are a stranger here, and not conversant with our laws. The kings and queens of Egypt may not marry except with their own royal blood. Ptolemy and Cleopatra are born king and consort just as they are born brother and sister.
BRITANNUS (shocked): Caesar: this is not proper.
    THEODOTUS (outraged): How!
CAESAR (recovering his self-possession): Pardon him. Theodotus: he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.

Courtesy. Good manners. Yes, the Japanese recognize that we "uncouth barbarians" don't bow and will make allowances for Americans and their barbaric ways--but is "making allowances" what one really wants? Does being seen as close kin of the monkeys at the zoo flinging poo at each other or the spectators realy what you hope to accomplish?

What is the goal? Is it to subbornly hold out on American "superiority" and rub other peoples' noses in it or is it to get the job done with a minimum of trouble and maximum of benefit? Which is truly great?

    C. S. Lewis' "A Horse and his Boy" said:
A warrior never scolds. Soft words or hard knocks are his only language

While I don't dispute that Obama went way overboard with that deep bow, this whole idea that Americans, even American presidents cannot or should not simply be polite by the lights of the people they are visiting just strikes me as rather strange. You talk about a previous generation's greatness. Well, that same previous generation would likely bust one upside the head for rudeness.

Johnny Horton's song "Jim Bridger" said:
He spoke with General Custer and said listen Yellow Hair
The Sioux are the great nation so treat `em fair and square
Sit in on their war councils, don`t laugh away their pride
But Custer didn`t listen at Little Big Horn Custer died

    Courtesy. Good manners.
