I hadn't heard that Detroit got turned around. I did hear it was somewhat deserted and that you could buy a fixer-upper home cheap. But that's been years, so ... :dunno:

    .
Certain neighborhoods of Detroit are being gentrified with young millennials moving into new housing there. For example, a young engineer who used to work at my plant moved back home to Michigan last year and has a new apartment inside a renovated factory near old Tiger Stadium. It's a start but I would hardly say Detroit has turned around. The city lost so much population over the years that they had to abandon entire sections of the city by shutting off utilities and no longer providing services in those areas.

And that is why my push mower won't start.
Because I haven't run it in... I can't remember when.

And I used to run the generator every month.
    And then I stopped.

A tiny shot of starting fluid down the spark plug hole will tell you if you have spark or not. If you have spark, then maybe you need fresh gas?

Starting fluid in the air intake gives a very brief surge, then it dies, on both genny and mower.

I added sea foam to the tanks, with some fresh gas.
    Attempted to start SEVERAL times.
So, we'll see if the sea foam cleans anything.
    Probably not. But I'm hoping.

So tomorrow, I try them one more time.
And I'm sure they won't work.
And then I'll take apart the fuel systems.

Yeah, I was thinking more like the positive momentum is turning Detroit around when I used the phrased "turned around." In hindsight, maybe not the proper phrasing. My follow-up post still stands on its own: investments are being made into the city of Detroit that are already showing results. And I truly believe Gary could follow suit, but it'd take the same kind of money coming in. I don't know if we'll ever see Gary become a great city again in our lifetime, but I'd like to think it will some day.

    Miller Beach is still viable.

But the Genesis Center was supposed to turn around the city. Then the RailCats stadium was supposed to turn around the city, with surrounding restaurants. The RailCats still play but the surrounding restaurants are pretty much non-existent. The lakefront Casinos were supposed to solve the problems but effectively were destinations that pumped some tax money in but didn't actually see the surrounding areas rebuild.

HardRock will be the same. It will be an exit ramp destination. People will come in, play, spend, and leave without going to any adjacent property or business. Casinos like this are just a safe haven spot. The fact that it easy in/easy out just will make it harder for the city to make anything around it happen.

No. I have a John Deere 100 series riding mower.
It gets used all the time.
And it received it's yearly service a few days ago.

And that is why my push mower won't start.
Because I haven't run it in... I can't remember when.

A couple of years ago, my push mower wouldn't start. I got a can of starter fluid spray and used that. Took a couple of applications but then it belched black smoke and fired right up. Applied it the first couple of times I started it this season, too.

I usually only make it a few seconds into a video. I can't believe I watched the whole thing! (Alla Seltzer)

If you don't get that you are a youngun.

I was thinking about Sasha the entire time, wondering if she watches things like that while relaxing, just in case the need arises at her wedding.

You can't replace ~50k jobs that paid inflation adjusted 100k a year with 10k jobs that pay inflation adjusted 50k a year and expect the city to return to former glory.

Gary had a population of 160k, with a big fat blue collar middle class.

Now it has a population of ~65k with ~8k or so in Miller.

The raw demographic collapse and the sheer former quantity of the mill jobs means that, without something extremely unusual happening, Gary will never recover in the way people hope/mean.

Expect a couple of cheap motels to pop up.

I have a bunch of the EGO tools, not the mower, but the batteries and tools are pretty legit. Nothing beats not having to pull start your weedwhacker or chainsaw every time you have to use it...
I have a mower, Weedeater, Trimmer, blower, chainsaw, tiller, and edger. I love them all. All the power of the gas ones I used to have, with no maintenance, no heat, and a lot less noise.
