I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has iindoctinated me into this wonderful sport and the many firends I have met. However, yesterday I had an accident crushing my right ring finger beyond repair. I have to see a hand specialist on Monday to find out if I can keep it or not. Pro is that it is only the tip to tje first knuckle. Looks like hamburger. After healing I will regain my grip. Con is you never want to lose an etremity. I gave Hickman the details yesterday and I will try to make some matches to just be a voyeur to the sport this year and keep in touch with everyone. Again, thanks for everyones help and kindness. Keep you posted.

Ouch! Hope you can keep it. Priority right now is on taking care of it and recovery. Shooting will be there in the future. Good luck.

Stay positive. I did a number on my middle finger decades ago. They fixed it and it looks and functions fine, I just have almost zero feeling in the tip, which is kind of cool in a way. I will admit it hurt like a SOB while healing.

It is stiff and weaker these days, but that is 35 years after the injury and plenty of shooting

    Thanks K!
At this point I think taking it would be a faster recovery. I've done some stupid crap but this tops it all! LOL. guess I got plenty of time for playing with my load data and should have plenty of rounds for next year. Gotta take the bad with th good. Just gotta work on my grip after recovery!

    Yikes!

The good news is that the ring finger isn't necessarily key to a good grip on a full-sized.

    Happy healing!

    hang in there!

I am sorry to hear of your accident.

Don't forget about the hand surgery specialists here in southern Indiana: Keleinart, Kutz, and associates I believe is the name. They successfully re-attached an arm.

    Best regards,

    Terry

Eh, you should just shoot weak hand only if you really, really, really want to shoot.

In fact, I have what's called an "Idaho Reloader" you could borrow if you'd like to do weak hand only reloadsm but you'll have to shoot a single stack gun. It holds a magazine with the base downward, then you push the magwell over the mag, twist the mag off, and seat it on your thigh. Might be tricky doing it without breakin' the 180, but it can be done.

Or you could reholster with a left handed holster and reload while it's in the holster with your left hand.

    I'm a helper. :D

Thank you Joe! I thought about it and appreciate your offer of help! But with all the forthcoming medical bills I don't see purchasing a single stack in the near future! However, since you are the helper you are. If you could find me a Mexico reloader for a double stack I would be willing to try!!!

    Good point ...

You could borrow one of mine if you like, but I don't know when I'll be at a match again.

On the other hand, if you get a left handed belt holster for your STI or your XD, you could do the thing where you reholster and do the reload while the gun is holstered. Some ROs freak out when you holster during a course of fire, but it's not against the rules and you can do it safely.

    1. Holster the gun (carefully)
    2. Press mag release and pull spent mag from gun
    3. Get fresh mag and push it into the gun until it clicks
    4. Redraw (carefully) and take care of business

I'm not trying to push you into doing something, but I think I know how much you love shooting and this would be an option for you to continue until you heal. In addition, it would be an option for carry/defensive use until your other hand works well enough to shoot, and doing it in a few matches will give you some practice in case you need to use your gun for more serious purposes.

My recent cut on my finger was nowhere near the injury you sustained, but I was not allowed to shoot with my right hand for at least 10 days after I got the stitches. I did a little shooting support hand only with a left handed holster and it went okay. I did have the advantage that I could transfer the gun to my right hand and kinda sorta reload the way I normally do, then transfer back, but I also could have done the reloads in the holster as well.

    Good luck!

With all due respect to my friend and instructor rhino, I would go back to your production gun. IMHO a tragic injury like this is a "meant to be, message from God," sort of situation. You need to be able to function in an injured self defense situation.

Our sport was developed as a self defense gun handling drill. I would go back to that. You are no longer competing with others, only yourself. You will learn a lot through the process.

Hang in there Bart! Feel better and heal fast. Hope to see you at WVPS in a couple weeks.
