Multiple reports of idiots in a 3 mile radius either half-assing it and leaving their candy bowls out with a note saying "take 2, please" or leaving them unattended to "run inside for 10 minutes", only to find them empty when they look again.

The one with a note lasted 30 minutes. The lady that ran inside was empty in 10. Idiots. Frankly, I'm surprised they didnt steal the bowl too.

This aint Mayberry. You either actively participate and HAND OUT THE CANDY, or you turn off your light and dont participate. There is no in between. (sadly) And there SHOULDNT be. Be friendly, engage the kids. Interact. Have fun. It should be fun being generous and interacting. If you dont like that, then dont participate.

I had teens that should have been too old try to steal what was left in my bowl. They got their candy and asked for a little more. I was being generous (at least they werent out TPing, etc) and I said they could have more. I forget exactly what the one kid said, but as he said it he squared up and adjusted his feet into an athletic stance, and I realized he asked a loaded question that if I said yes, he would take it to mean he could have the ENTIRE bowl. He was preparing to dump the bowl into his pillowcase and run. I stood up from my camp chair and said flatly "Ha ha. NOPE. Here's a few more pieces." and handed them each two more. He chuckled uncomfortably and they walked off.

And don't get me started on the two teen girls that pulled up and parked. Both the driver and passenger got out in costume, said trick or treat, and got back in and drove off. I was the only house of 4 on my block that was participating) But they could have walked in any of 5 other directions and had at LEAST every other house handing out candy. That was the only thing I saw out of line IMHO. So you can drive, OK. You should still be walking the route collecting candy. Thats cool. IDC. But If you're driving YOURSELF around, you're demonstrating that you are just too mature and responsible and "adult-y" to be trick or treating. Driving around is what adults do. So either adult or play children's games. You cant have it both ways.

And at least it wasnt a Slut-o-Ween* this year. So that was good.

    * One year 10-15 years ago we had no less than 6 girls between the ages of 12 and 16 dressed in various "Sexy ______" costumes marketed to college age women for parties or sexy time. One went all in, including the stilettos and thigh highs. But she wasnt even old/developed enough to "fill out" the costume. What were those parents thinking? I suspect that those young ladies were probably out taking their 10-15 year old kids around tonight in between drags on their marlboros. :):

I'll give candy to anyone who shows up in even a lame attempt at a costume, regardless of age. Amuse me, you get candy. I'll tell you, the adults often have some very elaborate costumes, and they're definitely getting candy, but their kids are getting extra.

Even when I was stationed in lower income areas, any attempt at a costume was welcome. A simple football jersey was fine. I know not everyone can afford to go out and buy some pre-packaged charater costume, but if you show in just a shirt from your favorite sports star, at least you msde the effort.

I actually kinda liked Slut-O-Ween. Our neighborhood doesn't partake much because it's mostly retired people spread far out, so we usually skipped handing out candy and went to the kids' friends' neighborhood. If I saw somebody tailgating at the end of their driveway with alcholic beverages, we made a beeline for there. Some of those ladies in Elvira costumes? :wow: Made a believer out of me...

after a long day working at the game, 8BDC3282-D175-422C-A61F-D5B4964B7787.jpeg i guess i should be thankful. my street was more or less blocked off when i got home while most folks either handed out candy or left a bowl full on the driveway (honor system). in the meantime the grownups commiserated with snacks and charcuteries and preferred libations. many, many, as i found out, in our first year here on the deep south side.

also, no one got shot, which was a bonus.

We had groups of kids coming around tonight. It's not unusual. Some of them are kids who live here, and they get together and go around in hordes. My kids did it too when they were younger. Herds of kids trick-or-treating, parents hauling around a cooler full of beer in a kid's wagon.

Then you have the kids who don't live around here, but they have a relative who lives in the neighborhood, so they invite them to come trick-or- treating in our neighborhood, because the pickings would be slim in their own area. I'm ok with that. Every kid should enjoy the fun of dressing up and getting free candy and such. Then eating way too much of it.

My kids are much more into this than I am, so they decorated this place up pretty good, and had some friends over to hand out candy. They even dressed up to hand it out.

I bought some candy to hand out, and my kids bought some little toys to throw in the bowl. They'd tell the kids to take 2 or 3 things. I just happened to walk out to check on things when this group of kids walked up. My daughter told them to take 2 or 3 things. There was a kid who was probably 12, took a green spider ring. He was happy like he hit the lottery. Guess he had enough candy. :): There was also a young kid in the group, maybe 6 or 7 years old. He was quite the honest little bandit. He said he was taking one of everything, and later he said he was ransacking the bowl! I was laughing so hard at the intrepidity of it, the bald audaciousness of it, that I didn't even stop it at first! He got a snickers, an almond joy, a rubber bat, a skeleton, a paratrooper skeleton, a rubber spider, and some vial that contained some sort of slime and a couple eyeballs (I'm not sure if that's a toy or candy). When he started to try do double up on the loot, I told him that was enough, and he quit. But man, did that kid go for it.

Oh, and I forgot the weirdest guy of the night. Im sitting there and this late 30s guy with no kids is walking up the street across the road from me. he's scouring the ground picking up trash. But in a way that looks like he is looking for more than just trash. Like even picking up coin size pieces, not just major stuff like water bottles, fast food bags, etc.

I see him pick up a piece and go up the drive to my neighbor and put something up on his porch. As he continues, he sees me and yells across the road "let them know I found a receipt by his truck. I think it fell out. I put it under his door mat. " Uhhh.. ok. thanks? He has his hands full. He was using a fast food bag he picked up as a trash bag and it was over filled.

And he was a man on a mission. I asked "You want to exchange bags? Ive got some walmart bags for you to put more in" He was thankful and agreed. I grabbed two bags and walked across the street. I handed him the bags and thanked him for his efforts. But he was surprised when I took the trash from his hands to throw it away in my trash can. I mentioned it was silly for him, to keep carrying around the junk and that I'd throw it away for him. He then asked if I had a bottle of water. I happily gave him one for his troubles and yet again thanked him for his efforts. And he kept going, though I dont think he was nearly as anal retentive as he started. or there was just not as much to look for. Not sure.

So I'm pretty sure he was high on something. Meth? Ectasy? I'm leaning toward the latter because he was hyper aware and VERY focused on the details. Like I said, this dude wasnt looking for pop bottles and fast food bags, he was looking for cigarette butts and pop tabs. weird.

Yeah, the mom of the girl who brought her daughter was polite and brought a bag of halloween trinkets. whistles, spiders, temp tattoos, fake cockroaches, witch fingers, etc. ("If you are going to visit, you gotta contribute!" Here here!) I thought "great, how lame." Quite the contrary. the kids were amazed. "COOL! A SPIDER!!!!!!" "OOOOH! Can I have a balloon too!?!?!?!" wow.

I loved both sides of it in my little town. Where I live now is back a quarter mile lane. Nobody comes back here. I love my home, but it's too big for just one man. We have two little grandchildren, and my ladyfriend and I both have one more on the way. I can't wait.

Pretty light turnout this year given the perfect weather. All good kids it seemed, young and old, neighborhood and non-neighbors.

And at least it wasnt a Slut-o-Ween* this year. So that was good.

Well except I appreciate the MILFs who dress up to escort their little goblins. I offer them an extra treat :@ya:
