I try to avoid eating things I can’t identify. It definitely isn’t a puff ball, it felt like a rubber ball.

I'm thinking you have an overly ripe puffball.

Young puffballs are firm all the way through. It isn't until they mature and dry out that they get "smokey".

We sliced this one thin and used it like a pizza crust. It was ok. Need to prebrown them in a pan next time.

Yes puffball. We slice them like bread and fry them in seasoned butter. Yum. We also slice them thinner and dry them for use in soups. Pretty much all puffballs are safe to eat except the ones with small spikes on the outside. But you have to get them while they are still white inside.

The mushroom lady brought me a pretty good haul. She, as always, was adamant about me doing my research to make sure they are safe to consume.

I'm studying up to make sure they are ringless honey mushrooms...












I am doing a spore print, to make sure it is white...
