My bayonet is stuck on my 91/30.

I put the bayonet on so I could take pictures with it. All went pretty well until I tried to get the thing off.

First I had some trouble getting it off, so I put some gun lube in the crevices to loosen it up. Here's where it gets real bad.

Using elbow grease I managed to loosen it considerably, so I gave it one big tug and it spun all the way around the barrel and "locked" into place, so now I have a sideways bayonet stuck on my rifle. It's a nightmare, and I would rather save myself some humiliation when I explain myself to the amused gunsmith.

Any tips on getting it off? I do have access to a vice-grip and helping hands, but I don't know if that's gonna be enough.

Dremmel with a cutoff wheel and slice it lengthwise - don't cut deep enough
    to get into the barrel.
Use a large screwdriver in the slot and twist it open a bit.

Get a new bayonet at a gunshow.

One thing I've learned over the years is very few of them actually fit and most need to be spread a bit. My current shooter fits but I rarely put it on.
You are going to need tools to work on it a vise and brute force

Have your wife take it to the 'smith and explain that the thingy is broken.

    Haha:):

Yea I would recommend using a gun vice or a vice with a rag so you don't scratch the gun up. I wouldn't dremel it unless its a last resort.

A trick I learned years ago was instead of a rag use a bit of leather. An old belt works great. Less chance of the vise or vise grips cutting through it and scratching the surface.

    North Dakota soon...
Cut the barrel down a few inches :):

Seriously, brute force and a vise. LOTS of brute force. Then lose the bayonet(s) in your house so you are never tempted again. Works for me :)

Have you thought of drifting off the front sight? Would that help with how it's positioned? It's hard to give any great, specific advice without any pictures of the problem!
