Don't they have maps of the sea floor with coordinates and distances to Wall Drug and all that stuff?

Well, maybe a small percentage.
And underwater volcanoes change things.

And it tends to be detrimental to the Commanding Officer's career.

And there is less sonar mapping done in contested waters due to .. well it would be like sneaking around an enemy encampment while blasting AC/DC from speakers.

I don't think that gives real good definition.
Also, every "event" would require remapping.

To date, only 7 percent has been surveyed.

Have I told you about the first time my wife saw an M203 grenade launcher mounted on an M-16? It was slung over the shoulder of a USAF Cop in the West Gate Shoppette (big convenience store with a HUGE beer cooler and 24 gas pumps) at Eglin AFB, Florida? She asks, "What is that?" So I answer, "It's a grenade launcher." That wasn't what she wanted to hear needless to say.

A few years later I was passing through Camp Speicher, Iraq. Went to take a shower, saw an M-16 with M203 grenade launcher hanging from the towel hook by the shoulder sling. That made me laugh out loud because I thought of that day years before at the West Gate Shoppette.

One thing I miss about my days on active duty, I see very few grenade launchers in unexpected places.

They could just leave the satellite(s) up there to do remapping... oh, in fact they do.
Not sure what surveying means (maybe by sonar?) but they have mapped the whole ocean floor by satellite several times.
However I think you are right about the resolution at least for the maps that are published on line. They are getting better all the time. The governments probably have better ones.
