    Same. I'm not dense but I still don't get what it does/it's purpose even after seeing it in action in the pics. There's no explanation in the article, but since it's a pro machinists technical magazine it's likely obvious to the intended audience.

    Think of a lathe spider as a ( set ) of integrated parallels for the chuck. A lathe spider is used as a part dead stop or to keep thin profile work parallel to the machine or both.

    It's used to keep thin and small parts parallel to the jaws.
    Think of facing a quarter. Attempting to hold something that thin in the jaws, and keep it parallel, requires a backstop.
