M16 3 prong flash hider

I picked up an early m16 style 3 prong flash hider for a build I'm working on. When installing the hider is it clocked to a certain position or is it just tightened and left where it is? I would assume you'd want a prong at 12 o'clock but I'm not sure.

You could time it however you want.

Just don’t put too many uggadugga on it, or it will shoot like crap.

I’ve got my prong at 6 o’clock and it works fine in the evening. I think the idea is to simply disperse the gases evenly outward so the angle of the prongs probably don’t matter too much.

In 1971 to 1973, I was my Army EOD unit armorer. We had 8 each A1 rifles in the rack. They all were indexed just like the AK picture above as I recall.. Prong on the bottom. I can't imagine it making much difference. Just tighten yours down and go.

I put a Smith Enterprises three prong on one of my rifles in the mid-90's. I don't recall anything special in their instructions. The thing operates like a tuning fork to break up the flash..

But I seem to recall that the gasket changed between the A1 and A2 so the A2 would index with the solid side down. I might be totally wrong though. I don't think you can get the A1 gasket so its kind of moot. I am old.. So there...

I've installed several 3 prong hiders from AAC and JP Enterprises and Surefire. In the instructions on the JP and Surefire it calls for a prong on the bottom. The hider should form an upside-down Y. The AAC as I recall didn't have specific timing.

The only theory going here is that a prong or solid bottom will stir up a little less dust when prone.

Nothing else in play.

Prong on the bottom helps when shooting prone too. Otherwise you are blasting directly into the dirt.

Holy guacamole this thing is a tuning fork. Even dry firing it rings. Thanks for the help everyone I mounted it with a prong at 6 o'clock. For anyone interested its a 30cal version on a 300blk 8.5 pistol.
