I do not recommend a pistol grip shotgun that does not have a buttstock. A pistol grip without a buttstock sends all recoil into the base of the thumb and can actually damage the hand. A bird's head grip doesn't do that nearly as severely.
I guess I should clarify. The ones I was looking at had both, stock and pistol grip. Or thumbhole. The bird’s head are cool looking but I don’t think it would be good for functionality.

I like the Mossburg 500 and would advise a Magpul Stock and a light.
I trained with a Mossberg 590A1 back many years ago it even had a bayonet lug. It ran very well. 00 buck hundreds of rounds.
I never seen the need of a shotgun until recently. So now I'm interested in one.
I can't believe how much they are nowadays.

A funny statement from a Self Defense Shotgun trainer on Youtube I always remember: "When guys ask me why I have a one-inch pad on my self defense shotgun, I tell them that's because I couldn't find a two-inch pad."
Definitely a must. Are there any decent recoil absorbing pads for the Maverick 88?

It's been quite a while since I've looked for one, I'm not sure if there is one, other than one of the "one-size fits all" kind. I know with my old 870 the pad was dried up and crunchy so I took it off when I converted it into a home defense gun. I hadn't replaced it when I took the gun to the range and fired a few slugs, and I think I actually stopped after like three shots. Now it has a leather buttstock cover with a pad inside that I cut from an old foam camping pad.

I never thought I needed to prove my manhood by stoically taking a pounding from my shotgun shooting slugs at the range ;)
