one last thing, is a Blackhawk SERPA holster OK or is the release thingy a bad idea?

It is legal. I have seen the Rhino use one in competition without a hitch. However, they are not popular in some circles. I have no first hand experience with them at all so I cannot say for certain.

If you shoot in the Production division, you are limited to 10 rds and the holster, equipment rules, and Minor scoring.

You can also shoot it in Limited 10, but you have more holster options and the benefit of Major scoring.

Or, you can shoot in Limited with your standard capacity magazines.

Minor scoring puts more emphasis on accuracy in exchange for shooting less powerful ammo (most shoot 9mm or dowloaded 40).

For the production and Limited 19 divisions do you have to have actual 10 round magazines, or can you use full capacity magazines downloaded to 10 rounds?

Downloaded is fine and what most often happens.

For cheap holsters and mag pouches, check our uncle mike's. They make plastic ones that're dirt cheap and work just fine. I wouldn't pay up for a SERPA holster when I could get the UM for less than $20. I have a Wilderness instructor belt and it's the cat's PJs. I also have a CR Speed I really like but that's more specialized.

As Coach said, they meet all the requirements of the rules. If you're getting a holster specifically for USPSA or IDPA, they're not the best choice. The retention mechanism is unnessary and will complicate the issue for anyone trying to learn an efficient draw and presentation.

On the other hand, if you've chosen the SERPA for your regular carry holster, it makes good sense to use it in matches at least sometimes to get the practice.
