    I'm looking at used trucks.
Does anyone here have any experience with the Ford Triton motors?
Any horror stories, or do you brag on them?

Just looking for some real world experience...

The 3v engines have a problem with cam phasers going out. Expensive to fix. As well as timing chains being an expensive repair.

Rust causes problems with the fuel pump driver module, it is bolted to the frame so when the frame rust it looses ground.

Early models had an issue blowing out spark plugs. Later models had an issue with spark plugs being seized and breaking off during removal. I have repaired both these problems and it was a PITA.

The 5.0l engine's are better imo, not sure how old of a truck you are talking about.

    Well, I WAS looking at a 2012 5.4l.
I guess not so much now.
We had one in our 2002 Ford Van and it was pretty stellar save for doing the required mileage tune up.

Who ever that engineering team was that thought putting the plugs on top of the heads directly under the fuel rails for the injectors needs a curb stomping.

An ingenious solution to a non-existent problem...

Smart move, I have one. $1k to change plugs and igniters (if the plugs break). Cam phaser replacement was $ 1k. The permanent replacement/fix for the cam phasers was $1600 5 years ago. Stay away, far far away.

I think the Tritons were removed from the truck in 2010 or 11?

    I think the 2012's have the 5.0 or 6 cyl, unless you're talking expedition/excursion.

    You sir are correct!
I took the word of a friend who said they thought it was a Triton motor.
I just drove by and looked. It is a 3.5L Twin turbo "Ecoboost".
It is a 4x4 with King cab (4 full doors).

Asking $6900, but I'm sure I can talk him down.
Not sure about the miles but it's VERY clean.

Guess I'll go talk to the guy tomorrow.

    Ecoboost engines are reliable

Maybe but I’m not sure I’d rely on a used turbo gas truck for 6900. That would have been 40k not that long ago. No thank you.
Yeah that seems odd and no, that engine package does not belong in a truck. JMHO.

Edit.....3.5 is almost OK. Thought it was a 4 cylinder...:dunno:

I own a 2005 5.4, I bought it new. It just turned 90,000 miles. I was experiencing the timing chain rattle he describes in the video. Which is usually caused by the chain tensioner gaskets blowing out. I usually do all of the work on my vehicles, I didn't want to do this. I had him replace all of the timing parts in one fell swoop and install the new high volume oil pump. The original oil pump on these engines so too weak and causes a lot of the wear issues, especially passenger side valve train. It cost me $3000, his shop is in Illinois. Money well spent in my case as my truck is in great shape and I have no desire to spend big $ on a new one. The spark plugs on these 2005 and up 5.4's get stuck in the head due to carbon build up. I changed mine myself with no issues, though mine had low miles. The earlier 5.4's and 4.6's are the engines with the stripped out spark plugs. The heads lacked enough threads to secure them. Hope this helps in your decision.

Be careful with the 3.5 Ecoboost as well. Timing chain, turbo, tranny.
Especially the first year or two of production.
