I think this is very spot-on. Any head-to-head polls (like DeSantis v Trump) are meaningless since it really depends upon the "field". Remember how Trump got the 2016 nomination among the umpteen dwarves... he didn't hit 50% anywhere until his home state of NY, which by then only Cruz and Kasich remained.

And doubly so with "traditional" announcements not coming until April-June, Trump's almost unprecedented very early announcement notwithstanding.
The whole primary process favors extreme candidates who have a loyal and sizeable base. They're nowhere near a majority. So they keep their candidate in the hunt until the primaries have eliminated everyone else. It's the only way they can win. If primaries were held on the same day, Trump would have lost. If primaries were rank-order voting, Trump would have lost.

I did an experiment with rank order voting on INGO in 2016 primary season. I think it was 16 candidates or something like that. Trump landed middle of the pack. Most of the votes for Trump were first choice votes. He didn't get many 2nd choice votes which hurt him. A strong minority wanted him, a majority didn't. But then, the cult of Trump hadn't yet formed on INGO. I remember seeing several people on INGO just sort of have a switch flipped, saying stuff like, "I believe Trump will be the greatest president ever," as if a hypnotist had just tapped them on the forehead. I've never seen anything like it.

Do you consider Desantis an 'extreme' candidate?

Those folks are looking for a leader to lead America first, likely after being red pilled…

I dunno. That didn't really seem to be the mood. People listened to the same speech I heard. I heard him pandering to Christians using hilariously incorrect "Bible" language. Next day I see people who seemed to think coherently up until then suddenly behave as if in a hypnotic trance. It was astonishing.

Trump accomplished some good things while president, despite stomping all over his tallywhacker. Fat lot of good it did when a senile old **** can undo almost everything in a few strokes. The one semi-permanent accomplishment is largely Mitch McConnell's. He furthered Harry Reid's nuclear option so that the hand-picked list he gave Trump for SCOTUS picks could actually get confirmed.
